I hope this is the correct board to ask this .

A friend of mine has windows 7 she has just updated to IE9,using a notebook laptop.

My question is why is it that Windows 7 with the update to IE9 will not work it loads the 9MSN page as her face page but will not load anything from the Internet ..face book inc.
It works perfect on Google chrome though,have done all the cleaning and such but still can't see to get it to work ...any ideas as to what is wrong.
Should she delete IE9 and reload IE8.

Sue - this is as good a board as any.

There are several members of GR who are IT experts. Hopefully they will spot your thread when they browse the boards later.

deactivate all toolbars, remove any that are not Microsoft
set home page to blank
close ie9, restart
if problem persists start in safe mode and do the above again
reboot
If the problem still persists then download the full version of IE9 update from Microsoft's web site and reinstall.
IE9 is a lot better than IE8.

Do not use msn as a home page it is full of junk and takes forever to load.

Make sure you have firewall and antivirus running - the best free software for this is Microsoft's even if it does not have a pretty interface.

ok I am assuming that MSN was her homepage on IE7 ?

What exactly happens when she starts IE9 ?

Rollo is correct about MSN taking ages to load but that is a seperate issue really.

My understanding at the moment is that she cannot access any other websites?

Nothing loads on IE9 Widows 7 except MSN page.
It works fine on Chrome no problems but she has just got IE9 downloaded from the web page.

Tried all the usual cleaning as it is very slow too.

What happens when, say, she tries to access Google?

She can type into Google say for example ....Genes reunited but when you click on for it to load Genes it will not load it it is just a blank page.

So she can access some websites (such as Google) for example?

What happens if she tries to access, say, the BBC News site?

I am trying to see if it is site specific.

No it does not seem site Spec,it won't load any site.
They are big FB fans and that is the site she wants more than anything ,it will not load it ,as I said I tried to load Genes but no good either.

Edit her Google toolbar is on her 9MSN page she cannot seem to get past that.

I take it she is in Australia?

Out of interest, ask her to type www.google.com into the address bar (box at top left of IE9 next to the two arrows). Then if the usual Google page loads, type in a search - could be anything - and then click on one of the results to see if she can access that page.

like I said Errol it is the b-y toolbars, Google is an especial villain. REMOVE all toolbars except MS an disactivate them.
If it still does not work then reinstall IE9 over the top using a downloaded full version from the MS website.

alternative (better) solution: use Firefox 21
add these extensions for some peace and quiet and to avoid PRISM
NoAds
NoScript

if you like being spied on then by all means use Chrome

Rollo I am inclined to agree to a degree although I am not convinced it is merely a toolbar problem hence me trying to go through a process of elimination.

Although I agree about Firefox, you have to bear in mind that many GR users are not overly IT savvy and have used IE for years so therefore may not wish to go through a new learning curve.

Surprise and shock but IE10 is actually not bad at all and uses less RAM etc than Firefox. It is much faster on an Intel platform, all the way back to SandyBridge. OTOH native security remains pants.

Google toolbar has been able to create the problem of not-being-able-to-access-other-websites with IE for years. It offers NOTHING except even more ad tracking than usual so junk it.

Completely off topic but Errol may be interested. Cars and their operating systems are the latest target of hackers and PRISM. There are ways to hack into a car OS ( there are two groups, one Microsoft CE based the other Linux ) and muck about. The OEMs have only just begun to think about security.

What happens when the OTA upgrade fails at Heston Services I can only guess.

At a rough guess within 10 years the consumer OS will be extinct. Most people will use an embedded OS in their smart phone, smart TV or game box. All manner of security, tax and commercial tracking will happen beyond the wildest dreams of the STASI, PRISM or Theresa May. The holdouts will be those using Linux. SKY already prohibits any router except for their own ...

The new X-BOX has a permanently on microphone. Yeah.

Some of the good things that are coming for smart phones are for the phone to be far more context sensitive - there are early signs of this in the latest Samsungs. Google has some very cool stuff in the lab. Apple are a long way behind the curve. having decided that the company is to be run by the legal department.

Finally fixed it .

Went to all programs ..accesesories....Systems tools... just unclicked the Internet Explorer No add ons and it was fixed.

Hope that does not cause more troubles though :-(

Doing that will run a stripped down version of IE with absolutely no add-ons and is a great way to run a "clean" version.
so that you don't have to keep going through your Start menu to access it, it is posible to add a shortcut to your desktop.

Do as you did above, so...

(all clicks are single left clicks unless otherwise stated)

1. Click on "Start".
2. Click on "All Programs".
3. Click on "Accessories".
4. Click on "System Tools".
5. RIGHT click on "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)".
6. On the menu that pops up hover over "Send to".
7. A new menu pops up - click on "Desktop (create shortcut)".
8. This will have created a shortcut on your desktop which you can rename if you wish by clicking once on its name and typing something to replace the existing name.
