It’s World Environment Day, what are your top tips to make the most of your leftovers and avoid the waste bin?

Eat them :-D
I'm delighted to say that now that we have our own outdoors we are able to compost a lot which would otherwise have gone into the grey bin.
The recycling facilities are far better too though I don't yet know where that stuff goes.

We only ever have a small amount of waste in our food waste bin, that is mostly chicken bones and a small amount of used olive oil or solidified fat off the roast. We compost a lot and eat left overs.

Love bubble and squeak which we had yesterday with bacon, egg and sausages.

Never have left overs only cook enough for us to eat.

As someone famous's wife once said when asked how she dealt with the leftovers, she remarked that she 'threw them in the bin',

It is a matter of choice and lifestyle. If watching the pennies then you do not waste food. But when you are not so cash conscious you are less likely to worry about leftovers.

In this house, when we have a roast dinner, enough is made so that next day we have a lovely fry up for dinner. Sometimes better than the roast..... :-)

I'm also a user up of left overs..think a lot of it is to do with being of an age when we didn't have all these convenience foods,so we had to be inventive to make delicious home made food...also we hate waste as I still do!
I even freeze bits of left over meat etc and keep till daughter comes with dog,and they love it.
Annoys me when we get families saying they can't manage on the benefits, and they're going out buying pizzas and takeaways when a good pan of stew or similar would be more nutritious and cheaper!

I love leftovers better than the original meal. Cold meat on Monday with bubble and squeak made from the potatoes and veg leftovers is delicious ! And casseroles and stews are far better the second day.

Either eat it or freeze it ...usually make enough stew etc for at least 2 meals so we can freeze one .

We have five bins plus compost bin. We don't throw much away as anything (not that there is much) left over goes into compost or for recycling. Today we are having cheese potato and onion mash, (using potato's left over from yesterday) with toad in the hole and onion gravy. I have a Nigel Slater cook book he makes some fantastic food from left overs, and they are so easy to do. :-D

Like PP, I don't have leftovers. My food recycling bin has things in it like bones, vegetable peelings, eggshells and other inedible stuff.

I was brought up (wartime) to eat everything on my plate, and the habit has stayed with me ------- except when eating out, when the portions are often huge!!!

We usually have bubble and squeak on Mondays. OH cooks it better than I do. Well thats what I tell him.
We have two composters, one on the go and the other slowly cooking. I dont have left overs. I only buy and cook what we need. Not mean just practicle. I dont buy whole chicken just breasts. Teabags and egg shells go in compost too. Any stale bread or cake if at all go out for the birds.

BTW just been told that the council are going to charge £36 a year for our green bin, garden waste, to be emptied and if we dont pay they will take the bin away.

Dear Paula

Hello to you

Good post. :-)

I am pleased to say we do our bit by recycling newspapers and cans

Magazines go the local GP practice and other stuff goes to the local charity shop.

Take gentle care
Best wishes

Thank you Elizabeth. I think we do quite well with all of our recycling, our local authority provides five different bins this makes re
cycling much easier. We have a compost bin too. Every little bit helps.

Regards Paula

We had stew last night....... and will probably have the "leftovers" tonight.

If we don't I'll make some small pies & freeze them.

Not many "leftovers" in this house, we're both good with the nosebag :-D
