It's a wig!

A man who clearly had a substantial amount of time on his hands recently took a case to the Advertising Standards Authority because he claimed an ad for a hair transplant clinic implied that bald men suffered a lack of confidence. How rude!

Given our penchant as a nation for red tape, his complaint was duly investigated and upheld to the point that the ad – and the implication that a full thatch leaves you equally full of confidence – has been withdrawn.

But clearly a full head of hair is a lifeline for some people – or at least for Wayne Rooney and Terry Wogan – while others, except myself & Homer Simpson, usher the tide out as quickly as possible by shaving their domes even before the last strands have given up the ghost.

It can be seen by some as the first sign of your own mortality and all of the quips about grass not growing on a busy street don’t really disguise the anguish it can cause.

Some take to wearing a flat cap when their hair begins departing. It’s ridiculous, of course, to imply that just because a full head of hair gives you confidence, therefore bald men are lacking in it; some of most famous men on the planet are bald and hardly qualify as shrinking violets.

Thierry Henry for example doesn’t seem to suffer from anxiety attacks; nor would you see the likes of Keith Wood, Bruce Willis, Michael Stipe, Sean Connery or Michael Jordan curl up into a corner because of a lack of self-belief.

And yet, on the other hand, there have been surprisingly few bald world leaders, which only suggest they’re not tearing their hair out as much as we thought.

Eisenhower was bald and there was a few of them in the Middle East – Moshe Dayan, Menachim Begin, David Ben Gurion – but most of them were fully covered on the follicle count.

Thanks Ann! I'm an understudy for Homer Simpson.

Anyone want to buy my comb collection? One previous owner - hardly ever used. No need!

What I am saying is that it is politically incorrect to make fun of people with a false leg, a glass eye, someone who limps, etc. but anyone who wears a wig is fair game.

And don't think wearing a wig is done just for vanity, my friend had marvellous qualifications as an engineer but could never get promoted. A whistleblower told him that at one interview he did really well but after he left, the panel leader said, "he is the best candidate but we can't give it to him, his image will not be good for the company."

He was only 28 and decided to get a hairpiece. Within 2 months he was snapped up for a really good job with another company. He was sure he would never have got the job if he had been bald.

Losing a leg, breast, eye or whatever is usually due to some sad misfortune.

Isn't baldness usually due to an abundance of testosterone? Wouldn't have thought that would be something you would want to keep hidden.

Nobody notices a bald head but every wig shouts it's presence.

Yes there is a bald lad around our town .I can never remember seeing him with hair, likewise a girl, mother of a couple of children now I believe, she has had half a head of hair as long as I can remember.

I have seen each of them wear hats when it is cold but have never known them try to look like something they are not.

Anyway, John Kerry does try to look like he is particularly well follically endowed.

is that why Vin Diesel is so popular?

or is it the barcode on the back of his neck?

In my opinion men who embrace their baldness look far better than those wearing wigs or doing the crafty combover.

Two of the sexiest men I worked with were both bald ....

Why is wearing a wig considered funny? If you lose a leg you get a false one, lose an eye and you get a glass one, have a masectomy and you wear a falsie in your bra, get arthritis and you get plastic hips and knees, lose your teeth and you get dentures.

But lose your hair and get a wig and every untalented comedian pokes fun.

I knew a poor guy who lost his hair when he was 8 and was the subject of bullying all through his childhood. When he got older he got a wig but the jibes continued. He took his own life last year.

We used to have a 'Whig Party' in the 18th/19th century Britain.
