buy a lily” old proverb which I thought of this morning, in my convoluted thought process.

I went from reading this comment by Paul O'Grady in an article

"“She knows the value of a pound and I’m like that although if I saw a beautiful painting I’d buy it because that’s for life, I just don’t believe in throwing my money away on stupid things.”

which led me to think about Dan's recent comment as we passed an art gallery in the town centre, that he'd rather buy an original painting to keep for life, than any flashy gadgets,

which led me to think about my mum's habit of going out to buy food and coming home with less food plus a plant...

which led me to think about a comment made once that I shouldn't have spent 70p on a cup of tea whilst out because it was an extravagance for someone on carers allowance ( it meant I could take baby Dan into a warm place to sit rather than stand for nearly an hour on an unsheltered station)

which led me to think, it is sometimes better to go without the loaf and buy 'the lily', something which brings you pleasure, or comfort, or which enriches your life in some way.

What lovely thoughts you have Rose.....off to see if I can think some too :-D

Ps My Mother used to do that too...one day we were hungrily waiting for her to come back from shopping and she came back with a candelabra.

Being a carer full tome myself, the indulgence in a cup of coffee out where you might actually speak to another person, especially if you sit outside in the sunshine, is priceless.

This is so true.

I am not very keen on art but will buy something I can look at out of the window.

That cup of tea out is vital to us carers. Because I have not had a night away from here in over six years now,we will go a very long way just to have a cup of tea or a pub lunch somewhere different.

There was the day we went to Tiptree to buy some jam and have a cup of tea and the day we went to the Potteries.

It is a waste of money I know but it does the trick.

It would be a very dull life if we just bought what we 'needed' instead of feeding our souls with something either beautiful or a frippery we can't afford. I went out for milk yesterday and came back with a bunch of lilac stocks...I can smell them now <3

We all need food for the soul an object of beauty / an enjoyment something to lift up the spirits.. Yes go on enjoy ... tomorrow's another day.

Susan, your mention of "candelabra" gave me a smile. It was one word that for some reason my mum found difficult to pronounce lol it always came out as
' candle-a-bra' :-)

Penny and Sharron, it's an absolute essential for carers to have a bit of 'normality', a chance to enjoy a tiny bit of freedom.

BC stocks are lovely, I've planted some seeds so I hope they'll grow, but I know the sweet williams will be out in a month or so and I love the scent of those.

Soul " food " is so very important .

My Mum also , used to go off to buy food and return with drawing books and crayons ..... lol :-D
