The big clubs, particularly Man Utd are global 'brands', not just football clubs. When I lived in the USA (briefly) I met more Man U fans than I ever have done here!! So perhaps these headlines were aimed at 'the world' :-D. Somewhat OTT though.

I absolutely adore my football and my team but there are many more important issues in life . I could not believe all the fuss about 1 manager leaving last night on TV and I don't think I'll even look at the newspapers today judging by the front page of the Sun :-| :-| :-|

A very famous preacher was sat in his front room in Sandfields in Port Talbot in 1930's about 5pm. The football match was over at Vetch Field and the fans were walking past his open window. It had been a wonderful game (Swansea had won) and they were discussing every move of the match in fine detail.

He commented the following day in his sermon about it. We have so much more reason to be excited by our God, yet how many churchgoers leave on a Sunday discussing every twist and turn of the sermon?

I would just say that news media tends to report what people are thinking and talking about. More people tweeted on Fergie's resignation than Lady T's death and funeral. Yet days were given over to Lady T - only half an hour late last night to Fergie.

Lady T was a major international brand. So is Fergie - in all countries where soccer is revered.

many more die in bombings in iraq and syria on a reguler basis but little mention
as one viewer said on points of view it implies that white lives are more important and others are not worth mentioning

Sport, football in particular is the most important thing to many people the only reason they own a telly. Sport means ratings, sponsorship and advertising revenue.
Sport is money, the new religion.

The BBC is just one of the many "we know what is best for you" bureaucratic organisations, funded by the taxpayer, where non-elected officials decide what policies it will follow.

They are behaving in exactly the same way as our elected "we know what is best for you" brigade that is called - The Government ;-)

Still headline news this morning.

It didn't merit headline news yesterday - 70 year old man retires. Not news. His posible replacement is still not news - it's not as if it's an important job like running the country or brain surgery.

He organised over-paid, "entitled" adolescents running around a field chasing a ball.

his retirement was mentioned on our 6 pm TV news .................... as the very last item in the sports section.

News is what people are interested in. Ferguson's retirement is global news yet another Italian merchant marine accident not. News has nothing to do with taste.

There was an awful piece of news on the radio:
At least six people have died and several others are missing after a ship crashed into a control tower in the Italian port of Genoa

Not mentioned on TV.

disgraceful - far more important things going on in the world than football FGS - grown men kicking a ball around a field getting paid obscene amounts of money for it and being hailed as "stars"

It was "breaking news" on our Sky channel this morning :-(

That was over and above the news of the 3 young women who were abducted by 3 brothers a decade ago.

It was said by Martin Sorrell on BBC tonight that more tweets generated by Fergie's resignation that Lady T's death. :-)

I also found it odd that football managers came first in the news today,when there were other IMO more important stories.
