I'm trying to unravel a family tree of the last 35 years. Which involves multiple marriages and births.
Does anyone know why one birth would be allowed to be registered three times.
Example:

Ann born1972* July\August\September as father G

Ann born 1972* July\August\September NOW as father D page coding the same*, but added D83

((Married father D in 1973 Jan\Feb\March))

Ann born 1973 Oct\Nov\Dec father D (completely different page reference)

Is it possible to actually register someone's birth three times?
I can see one possible explanation of changing the surname by deed poll (perhaps the D83 number) But then after marriage re-register the birth yet again at a different time i.e. 1973?

Has anyone else seen this multi-registration. And as another peculiarity and strangely enough the second daughter \ sister of the above, managed to register her son twice, with different first name combinations.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Do you have the certificates?

Yes its possible for births to be registered several times

example, Ann born1972* July\August\September as father G

((Married father D in 1973 Jan\Feb\March))

then re-registered the birth to legitimise the birth after the marriage as below the reference D83 is a reference to look at December quarter 1983 for that event

Ann born 1972* July\August\September NOW as father D page coding the same*, but added D83

Edit, the birth is only registered twice. There will only be one birth cert issued when you apply and it will be the re-registered one you will receive regardless which one you order

Thanks Roy, could you confirm that the D number would represent a name change by deed poll, from your experience.

I haven't applied for the birth certificates, but probably that's the only solution. But a birth certificate, I PRESUME would have been issued with each registration? Taking particular note that D number added to the second registration with same page reference numbers. But after marriage another entry took the birth into a another quarter year & year. Again, I'll presume the DATE OF BIRTH, would remain the same, even if the registration quarters outside the legal requirement to register a birth.

Another note of interest, do you know where to obtain divorce records?

Forgot to add the Ann born 1973 Oct\Nov\Dec father D (completely different page reference)

How do you now who the father is? it could be coincidence and unrelated couple same surname and maiden name,

Deed polls are deed polls, theirs no birth cert for them and they are not registered on any birth index,

The D83 is the reference for the GRO to look at that year and quarter when issuing the birth cert for the birth registered in 1972, The one you receive will be the re-registered one that was re-registered in the December quarter 1983

Just to also say the entries

Ann born1972* July\August\September as father G

Ann born 1972* July\August\September NOW as father D page coding the same*, but added D83

This is typical of a birth when a couple have a child but they are not married to each other but the father wants his name on the birth certificate so goes and registered the birth with the mother, so you have effectively two entries one in the mothers name and one in the fathers name but their will only be one birth certificate the added D83 is as i said the reregistration at a later date
