Most countries in Western Europe limit access for BMD records to immediate family for records less than 50 years old ( France 100 years ). In order to access these records you must provide documentary proof of the relationship, usually by production of the livret famille (family book).

AFAIK few other countries are as open on BMD as the UK and USA. Even in the UK it is no longer possible to access records post 2006 on line and access to any for the last 50 years has been tightened.

Other than that there are the usual newspaper BMD announcements and OP trees.

British citizens born /deceased abroad would normally be registered at the consulate going back at least 200 years.
