As we are now house hunting again we have contacted a few estate agents, with a very strict criteria. Part of this criteria states that Mum is in a wheel chair and demands constant attention hence the reason for the property to be all on 1 level. That we want a property to be able to convert so that we have privacy away from Mum (4 bed or 3 bed with room for a conservatory) 2 bathrooms (one which must be convertable to a wet room for Mum) and outside ground for dogs

So WHY oh WHY do they ignore this, as 1 estate agent sent me "suitable" properties all of which have not only outside steps but internal staircases. One of the properties even is on 3 levels the top being a granny annexe another is a town house with only 3beds 1 bath.

It really beggars belief !!
Thank fully the other estate agents we have contacted are taking our strict criteria into consideration, even stating that properties that I may have liked would not fit the criteria and for what reasons.

It will be a frustrating time for you having to look at so many details and if the agent isn't listening to your criteria, then tell him you won't be using him. I hope you will find something suitable very soon so you can get sorted out through the summer, it's a big step you are taking and a lot to take on but you have done so well thus far, I am sure you will get things right eventually.

My hubby works for an estate agents just a pity we are in the wrong area. Hope you dont find it too daunting - if your area is like ours there are lots of bargains to be had.

Oh Uzzi - mum's property in Portugal would be ideal - with minor alterations!!
3 double bedroomss (2 en-suite), plus separate bathroom.
Living/dinng room and kitchen all on ground floor.
There is a first floor - which is another living room with wood burning stove & verandah. Huge garden with 6ft wire fence all around (mum had 'houdini' dogs). It's even got 2 gates - so you open one, get car in, close it, then open th second, so dog's can't 'nip out'.
Ooodles of storage (as we found out when we went to sort out mum's stuff) - and it's fully furnished :-D

Do you get the feeling we want to sell it? :-S

Dosn't cost and you can do it at leisure in your own home. :-) :-) :-)

It Ok to search on the Web but you do need to see

1: The house to see real condition
2: The area - might be a lovely house in a lousy area

PP yes you do need to see the property, but I search the web and you can get a rough idea what the house is like inside, then go on google street view and again you can get some idea of the area, it saves you going to properties that are obviously out of the running.

PPal, you still need to see the property if you rely on estate agents sending details!

We searched on Z''''la and got more suitable viewings lined up quickly than if we'd waited for agents to send the details in dribs and drabs.

Liz ...Thanks it is daunting as I am also trying to sort details to get rid of Mums YES there will be a guest room as our "den" will have sofa bed (I hope)

Mary There are some amazing bargains out there, unfortunately our criteria really cuts them down I saw a 4 bed 2 bath very close to us for €38,000 (it´s a bank repo ) but sadly it´s a townhouse. I am sure I will find a "bargain" mind as the larger older properties with land seem to be dropping in price more and Yes it is a shame you are too far up but once we have settled we will arrange a day to get together.

Maggie .. If only because I love Portugal (that is where we were supposed to be) but alas :-( it´s now too far for OH to travel to work (part of our criteria is travel time) Yes I did sort of get the feeling you may want to sell. What part of Portugal PM me the rough details because I have friends that way and I know somebody looking to buy out there.

Annina :-D trust me my little fingers now fly across the keyboard searching for property and it´s those estate agents that we have tended to contact. As PP said we still need to see the property as the net doesn´t give the nitty gritty details nor does it give a floor plan so I can work out if suitable for conversion, Nor does it tell you the state of the property decor or furnish wise.

PP I am with you on that one.

Carol That is exactly what I am doing but finding it hard to actually find most on google (they won´t give exact location out) but it is ruling out some properties that could have been good but with a 50min drive to work and top end of budget rules them out.

Joy What can I say I think I have to look at it a bit like a baby ..it´s going to be a shock to the system but I will get used to it, there most certainly will be teething problems but once the teething problems leave home then I can settle down to retirement :-D I think I need to ask to be isolated in the country not because the mutts bark but to save the neighbours from my screams ! :-0

Island We have a similar thing to Zoopla well several really and I do regular hit them with a search and requests hence many estate agents are contacting us.


It´s going to be an ermmm fun/trying/horrendous/enlightening/frustrating time. I no doubt are going to fall in love with totally unsuitable properties like 300yr old coaching inns with a couple of annexes already there, or 6bed 4 reception 17,000m2 of land needing some reform ,in budget by miles, out of driving time by *tongue in cheek* a few minutes. :-D

I also am going to have to move for the 4th time in 9yrs !! I´m doing well
