My favorite aunt died today at tea time right on the final whistle.
The same hands that cooked and cleaned and petted her dogs
The same face with the sharp blue eyes and teasing smile
The same lilting voice has fallen silent.

All that is left is shrunken without color or meaning.
I shed a tear.

Let down the bars, O Death!
The tired flocks come in
Whose bleating ceases to repeat,
Whose wandering is done.

Thine is the stillest night,
Thine the securest fold;
Too near thou art for seeking thee,
Too tender to be told.
