On offer is this fabulous Victorian photograph album of the SUNDERLAND family.

Please see below for many more photographs.

An extensive two weeks of research has gone into the history of this album with some facinating finds. A little information regarding the characters within and how they fit with the photographs:-

Let us begin with the last photographs, photographs of a Memorial for a Lister Sunderland:-

Lister Sunderland was Born ca 1858. Burial was on 18the May 1881 - Lucknow

He is remembered in Ravensden Churchyard: LISTER SUNDERLAND LIEUT 72nd Seaforth Highlanders, youngest son of Thomas Lister Joseph Sunderland and Anne Sunderland (Wood), who died at Lucknow May 18th 1881 aged 23 years.

Occupation: Lieut 72nd Seaforth Highlanders

Listers Parents, Thomas Lister Joseph Sunderland and Anne Sunderland, resided at 'The Grange' - Ravensden, Bedford England. As a result of the family living there, part of a road called Kimbolton Road is named 'Sunderland Hill). This road leads upto 'The Grange' which is now let out as flats.

Thomas Lister Joseph Sunderland's father was Dr Joseph Sunderland, a surgeon, the family resided at Coley Hall. Children born to them were as follows:-

Thomas J, M (cal 1839)

Eliza Anne, F

Marsden Samuel James, M

Anne Wood Maria, F

Mary Anne, F (cal1846 -)

James, M (cal1848-) Lister, M (cal1858-bur. 1881)

Major and honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas J Sunderland served in Bedfordshire Regiment of Militia 19th November 1858 - 21st October 1893.

Lieutenant Colonel Marsen Samuel James Sunderland D.S.O.:

Died : 25th March 1914 Colonel Sunderland D.S.O. entered the Army in 1861, became Captiain in 1876 and Major in 1881. He served in the Nile Expedition, 1884 -85, and actions of Abu Klea and Gubat (Despatches twice; Brevet of Lieutenant Colonel, Medal with two clasps; Khedive's Star), became Leiutenant Colonel in 1885, and Colonel in 1892. He took part in the Hazara Campaign, 1888 (Despatches; Medal with clasp), and was created a Companion of the disstinguished Service Order (London Gazette, 12th April 1889); "For services during the operations of Hazara. Marsden Samuel James Sunderland, Lieutenant Colonel, Royal Sussex Regiment". He commanded 91st Regimental District 1892 - 97.

His favourite recreation was farming Prince of Wales's pheasants, which he introduced into England in 1903. (source - DSO recipients (VC and DSO Book).

There are photographs within the book which show that Colonel Sunderland indeed had a wonderful hobby and high life. There's a beauiful photograph of what looks as though the whole of the village have turned out to watch a cock fight in the middle of a field - there are Pall Mall glasses upon a table, two suitably dressed gentlemen and a pair of cock to the ground.

The whole family enjoyed hunting. Colonel Sunderland bred pigs and cows as well as the Prince of Wales's pheasants.

The photographs within show Coley Church & Coley Hall, All Saints Church - Bedfordshire Village, The Grange - Ravensden, Scenes of India, Scotland and various regiments. The family obviously visited the International Exhibition 1862, there is a photograph of The Nave, From Eastern Dome

This is a fantastic piece of social history as well as an important piece of military history.

The photographs are not going to be split, please don't ask. The book deserves to stay as a whole object, perhaps within a military museum or Ravensden.

It is a personal collection of a military family who loved and lived life to the full! I believe it should stay that way - there are what appear to perhaps be postcards as well as photographs of drawings (the church - Linton cross - the pictures of lovers). There are fabulous photographs of two rooms, one perhaps a drawing room, the other a living room - superb detail of Victorian life.

This is a beautiful mix of life in the mid/late 1800's.

Always happy to provide more information - I have managed to track down two living relatives of the Sunderland family to which this album is linked.

Don't forget to look at ALL the photographs below - you won't see an album like this often!

See if you can spot the Inidian children waiting with a sedan to carry the Victorian lady.
