maggiewinchester Report 12 Mar 2013 13:14

Actually, I fail to see why we should pay for them to languish in a prison cell at our expense.
In view of the report today, that those on benefits who were (as a trial) given their rent money to pay themselves - and surprise surprise, many now owe rent - it's difficult with money in hand, no food and other bills to pay, to decide what to use the money for.

think ALL MP's found guilty of breaking the law/fiddling expenses, should not only be forced to do community service, they should also be given 2 sets of clothes, a bedsit, and to live for at least 6 months on either jobseekers or other benefits.
They should get an idea of how their policies affect REAL people.

edit: not really a punishment, but a damn sight harder than being spoon fed in prison, with, for example no fear of their tv being reposessed, and being fed 3 times a day.

My Opinion(For what its worth) is they should have both lost their Licenses for a decent period of time,(2-3yrs) then made to retake a driving test, fined a large amount of money(Each) then made to pay the full costs of prosecution etc. and tagged, rather than the taxpayer funding the cost of their Imprisonment. What they did was wrong, but I expect others have got away with it,But they did,nt commit Murder or mug old people.**M**.

LilyL Report 12 Mar 2013 12:59

As far as I'm concerned they deserve each other! Their arrogance is breathtaking, as, let's face it is most M.P's! I think Prison is totally appropriate for both of them as a community service order and a fine (they're so rich, that wouldn't have any affect at all) wouldn't have anything like the stigma attached, and somehow we, humble peasants have to get it through to these people that, like the rest of us, they are accountable and WILL be punished. Peverting the course of justice is a VERY serious offence and nobody who ever they are should be under any illusion that if convicted they will be severely punished; hopefully it might deter others?!!!! As for telling 'her' son, IF she did, that his father wanted him aborted! well! words fail me - wicked cruel creature. As I say they deserve each other.

Dermot Report 12 Mar 2013 12:51

I suppose the son is happy she ignored the request. I'm just trying to take something positive from this stupid situation.

And, no, I'm not taking points from anyone. I have my very own to contend with.

ChrisofWessex Report 12 Mar 2013 12:38

According to DM today they have a tv in cell. Nice they will be able to keep up with current affairs.

As a mother/g.mother I cannot believe she was so cruel as to tell her son his father wanted him aborted. If it was true she should have held her tongue.

I hope the journey to their new residences was not held up by the bad snow & icy roads.

Muffyxx Report 12 Mar 2013 11:49

I agree....I think community service and full payment for the waste of money spent as a result of the lies would make more sense.

I should imagine that a term in prison will not be a happy experience for either of them, but it is no more than they deserve. They lied time and time again, they planned together and in their arrogance they mocked the law and continued to pervert the course of justice. A fine and extended Community service would have been more fitting in my opinion, and less expensive for the tax payer. I'm pretty sure that the average cost of keeping a person in prison is £45,000 per year for an adult and more than double for a young person.

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 12 Mar 2013 10:43

To deliberately and knowingly try to pervert the course of justice is a crime no matter the seriousness of the offence involved, and that wrong is not only multiplied a thousand time over when the wrongdoer is "a cabinet minister" serving in the government, it is sheer hypocrisy :-|

Chrissie Report 12 Mar 2013 10:21

I can't say I think that they did anything very wrong in the great scheme of the universe...seems to be quite common....but I think the sentence is right for them given all the expense and time wasting.

Dermot

Dermot Report 12 Mar 2013 09:34

The rich & powerful (plus a handful of TV personalities) believe they 'will always get away with it'. Money talks & never lies.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 11 Mar 2013 22:36

no one is surprised I am sure - apparently MPs are four times more likely to break the law than the likes of us

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 11 Mar 2013 22:24

Is one surprised that people who do wrong never are sorry until they are caught?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 11 Mar 2013 21:28

imagine them being your parents :-( my lovely parents were law abiding god-fearing people who had little money but compared to those two they were pure gold - no mistake

~Lynda~ Report 11 Mar 2013 19:45

I don't feel sorry for either of them, but they will probably spend 4-6 weeks in a "real" prison, her probably in Holloway, him maybe Wandsworth, before spending the rest of there time in open prison. The thought of going in either fills me with absolute fear, which I assume it will them, hopefully it will make them think about what they did, and possible come out realising what idiots they have been.

McB

McB Report 11 Mar 2013 19:37

He can afford it from all the false expenses claimed & if he had just got a fine i bet us tax payers would end up paying it, more expense claims.

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 11 Mar 2013 19:16

Muffyxx, I don't think we will ever know the truth about "Plebgate" and that Andrew Mitchell will soon be popped off out of the way to join the "Gravy Train" in Brussels as a European Commissioner ;-)

As to Chris Huhne and Vicky Pryce, the prosecutor told the court that the CPS spent £79,015 prosecuting Huhne and £37,544 prosecuting Pryce. He added that the police spent a further £31,000 on extra investigations launched at Huhne's behest. The Crown Prosecution Service is seeking to recover costs from both Huhne and Pryce, the issue has been adjourned to a hearing at a later date.

They should pay the lot, they can well afford it :-)

Of course they will only do 2 thirds, plus time off for model insiders,,,,16 weeks could see them out and about.......not much to forego as far as family are concerned as they get their VO......they will be in a low grade prison and probally an open air one,,,,,,,,
