1. A virus

2. had been hacked

( 1 ) an outbreak of even more irritating adverts than usual
( 2 ) search engine, results gone goody
( 3 ) bank account cleaned out

Some popular ways to get a computer virus etc.
Click on anything and everything "yes" especially "free" software.or to get access to a site and a plugin etc is needed.
Torrents.
Run Windows. Even better run Internet Explorer.
Install Lavasoft Ad-aware.

Best ways to avoid.
Don't run Internet Explorer or Chrome.
Run Firefox, install NoScripts and AdBlocker.
Run MalwareBytes (free) once a week

Remove Java.
Don't install free software unless it is from SoftwareForge or somewhere else reliable.
Don't install pirated software.
Don't download movie torrents etc unless you know what you are going. Most of the torrent clients are themselves bug infested cockroaches. The only one you can trust is QBitTorrent (free).
Don't install Twitter Addons
