In China is being built an identical Titanic ship by an Australian billionaire. She will sail Southampton/New York run.

Good idea? Bad taste?

Don't know really.

It's their money I suppose.........wouldn't personally want to do the trans Atlantic voyage...but would love to have a good nosey on it in dry dock. :-D

Chris.............i am sooo excited about it, i can't begin to tell you.

I really do deeply appreciate and respect the tragedy of the Titanic, in fact i have listened to interviews with family members who's ancestors lost their lives.

Particularly, the Great Neice of the Captain who thought it was in bad taste.

I can't even watch a Titanic film without sobbing my heart out...........but i so hopefully want to have the opportunity and experience of boarding the ship when it docks in Southampton in 2016.

Will it sink?

Muffyxx Report 6 Mar 2013 21:57

Probably not as long as it doesn't hit an iceberg :-D

As a Retired Naval Architect, I was really sad regarding the disaster of this fine ship. If a replica of this ship is being built I hope every modern design aspect for the safety of life at sea is applied.

I doubt it will be an identical ship as surely they will not install old fashioned engines to power it.

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 6 Mar 2013 22:35

GlitterBaby - The engines for the Titanic were steam driven fuelled by coal. The new engines will most likely be diesel engines. The main modern design feature will probably be the introduction of a double skin hull which applies to all new passenger vessels these days. I would have no hesitation in sailing in her.

Well no..........obviously it wont be identical as far as the engineering side is concerned.

If you google........you can see all the plans for Titanic II

GlitterBaby Report 6 Mar 2013 22:42

How can they say it will be indentical then?

The plumbing, electrics, kitchens will not be the same etc.

So will it look like the original with the same type of cabin fittings etc

Can not see the point of it actually.

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 6 Mar 2013 22:45

Would imagine health and safety would prevent it from being an exact replica........but then in this instance thats probably a good thing?

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 6 Mar 2013 22:57

It will look the same apparently inside and out but the engines will be diesel and an extra deck is there to accommodate the extra lifeboats.

PH - Have you seen 'A Night to Remember'? That was as close to the truth as can be.

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 6 Mar 2013 23:03

You are quite right Muffy. The ship can only sail if it meets all the criteria of rules and regulations of today, therefore it cannot be exactly the same vessel which was completed in 1912. I can only assume that it will look like the original ship if viewed from a berthing jetty.

OH and I think it is in bad taste but that is personal. OH's g.uncle died as a 3rd class passenger.

I spent a lot of researching Titanic some 25 years ago or so.
I do not understand the obsession some people have re this ship. Unless it was because she foundered on her maiden voyage.

Go to any Titanic exhibition and it seems to be full of stalls selling what we would refer to as tat and not remembering the hundreds who died on that dreadful night.

I don't have a problem with it at all - after all - they are constructing new buildings on the 9/11 site and nobody moans about that and let's face it, 9/11 killed twice as many people.

One of my ancestors was a victim of the Titanic disaster. He was a fireman and he is buried at the Fairview Lawn Cemetry, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

On one of the Titanic sites where it lists all the victims, you can "claim" your family member.

I fiound it quite moving when i ticked the little box to say .........yes, he belongs to me.

Guinevere Report 7 Mar 2013 07:48

I'd love to sail on it.

I don't think it's bad taste at all, it's historical reconstruction.

Enough time has passed now, I doubt there is anyone alive today knew anyone who died on the Titanic. It happened in 1912.
