Can anyone recommend a knitting site? I've seen one but it's American and I get confused about the needle sizes.

Julia in Derbyshire is possibly the best person to answer - there are quite a few knitting circles around, often held in local libraries.

Have you seen this site?

Here I am, late on parade as usual. I use a site called Ravelry for both knitting and crochet patterns, and yes, it is an American site, but conversion charts are also printed.

Just put Ravelry in your search box, and then click to the page when the menu of choices comes up. Then you will have to invent yourself a user name and a password. After that you are in. You choose from knitting patterns or crochet ones. It does not cost anything to join, and you do not get reams of unsolicited mail from them.

I hope this is going to be of use to you, but please come back if you have any more questions.

Good Luck

I also use Ravelry and find it very helpful. My favourite things I have knitted from the free patterns are the sucky-thumb mitts and tiny scarf for my granddaughter. :-)

Hi Lindi, I have made many articles from this site, but mainly from the free crochet patterns.
For Christmas I made, for one of my grandaughters, and four great grandaughters, a bag each using the workings of Vendula Maderska. They were absolutely lovely, and I used some of her motifs to enhance a cardigan for each of them. If you want to see similar, go onto the free crochet patterns, and put her name in the select box. They are lovely for little girls.
At the moment I am making a bag for myself, on similar lines, but with no embellishments. Realised when out in the city shopping last week, that I prefer a bag that hangs round my neck, over the shoulder, and hangs on the front. This pattern and style was just the thing.

Do you crochet. I can put you onto loads of blog sites, if you do.

Anyway, nice to know of someone else that takes up the needles.

Take Care

Hi Julia
Any mention of crochet will have my sister laughing till she cries - over Christmas she tried to teach me, but it is like me trying to work with five thumbs on my hand lol. She could not believe that I just couldn't 'get it'. My problem is holding the wool properly.
I will try again soon lol, I have a video, magazines and I look on youtube.
There are some lovely patterns on ravelry and also when I got stuck on a pattern someone soon came to my aid. xx

Thank you Ann
I can crochet but I prefer knitting. I haven't done any for a long time so I need simple patterns. I came back to it because I had to knit some bedsocks. The ones my mother knitted for me have finally fallen to pieces. In the end i copied the old ones and they didn't turn out too badly.
