Some of the updates are free but not major ones which are usually yearly and as Rollo says, are sometimes not worth the money.

If you want to update, which I do as soon as I get a new copy, right click on the FTM logo on your desktop and click on 'open as administrator'.....once open click on update.

A lot of people don't like the latest one or two editions of FTM. Some have other uses for £ 50.

It is usually possible to get previous editions, new, for under £ 10 in Tesco and Maplins. FTM is also often sold on eBay, Amazon etc.

New or second hand they work fine. Installing it on a thumb drive and then going to the library will give you many of the advantages of your own paid sub. Choose a quiet time.

Given the annual fee imho Ay should make an FTM update free but they don't.

Good luck
