Elizabeth2469049 Report 21 Dec 2012 13:42

I was quite aware of "tracking cookies" but have just had evidence of how detailed they are. I have recently done shopping on line, including buying a printer from A-r-s, where I bought one. Next shopping assorted Christmas presents from M & S, where I bought two different items.

Then a couple of days ago I found on GR this advertising. The banner across the top showed the various items I had looked at in A-g-s, and the banner down the left-hand side side the items I'd looked at in M & S. Definitely based on my order, it included one item I'd added to the basket and later deleted.

Now what is the point of all this? I didn't need any pressure, I'd already bought the items. And how did they know I used GR anyway? Perhaps the cookie machine thinks all GR members think alike!

And now I come to think of it I had a similar experience a few weeks ago when I was window-shopping for washing machines (didn't buy that time) and a J--- n
L----s stream of of washing machines appeared on GR as well, that time I thought it was just coincidence.

It isn't as bad as FB. You only have to type a word on there that's included in their 'hit list' and adverts appear on the side.

We tested it one night with underwear :-D it was hilarious.

I use IE and sofas appeared for months all over the place :-( after I had looked at DFS web site!

G Chrome, holds all your searches and targets your shopping choices

But as J said above, you can and should delete your temp file/cookies etc

:-)

My puzzle really was how they managed to connect my quite independent shopping with me as a GR member - that's some sort of high-tech cross- referencing! I do delete temporary files on disk cleanup quite frequently, perhaps I should get them deleted automatically - but I am usually happy to keep the cookies that take me straight to my home page, just lazy I think but I suppose it would be more secure to go without!

G**gle Chrome is the usual culprit!

The teacher at my computer class warned us about it.

I too have noticed that more and more sites give the warning that cookies are being harvested, and that often very remote things ive looked at appear in the margins , of not only GR but most sites I Use, like aol........which is my ISP.......

Unfortunately, deleting cookies en-masse has its downside as you will also loose settings and preferences for the sites you use.

A better way is to delete selectively. I use a program called CCleaner which I run daily. This program allows you to create a white list for those sites where you wish to preserve cookies. Once set up it is a simple matter to keep it updated with new sites.

It also clears out such things as your temp files and browser cache so you don't need to worry about those getting cluttered up either.

Incidentally, Chrome is banned in our family.

They are a pain, I have been doing a lot of shopping for presents on line and the ones I have looked at for "she who must be obeyed" keep popping up on the screen. She has already guessed the title of a book I bought her as a result!

Just as well I haven't been checking out the Ann Summers site!

Must run my cookie cleaner, but I don't think that is foolproof.

If I don't post again before Christmas
Merry Christmas to all!
