Anyone watch this excellent programme? once again I have thought of how marvellous my Mam was, bringing up we three children under such poor conditions and with rationing to contend with.
At the time we were 'sheltered' from knowing how hard things really were.........for all the hard times now,we are soo lucky.

Following in the footsteps of many wartime farmers, they transport their gifts, food and beer on a vintage steam train to Chislehurst Caves, where they discover what Christmas was like for some of the 15,000 people who sheltered there.

It was very, very interesting. I hadn't known that there had been a chapel and a hospital in the Caves.

Hello Joy
I didn't know there were caves at Chislehurst and was amazed when told 15000 people sheltered underground!!

Loved the homemade decorations, took me right back to schooldays ie lanterns and streamers :-D...I remember I liked the taste of Mam's rabbit pie....but we were told it was 'wild rabbit' and not bunny ;-) :-D

I had a holiday in Kent a few years ago...Maidstone & Canterbury. If I'd known the history of those caves i'd have been interested to visit them.

I wonder too Harry :-) yes agree it was certainly a wonderful programme.
Hard times but I should think folk pulled through by their sense of humour and togetherness.

Seasons greetings to you and yours Harry

I remember the hard times during the war and I still have the (mental) scars to prove it.

Saw the notice which said 'bread rationed' - not until after WW2 was over, it was not.

Came in about 1946 - instigated by Labour Govt.
