Very worrying this new policy. Unless we challenge the person (and that looks a bit rude to them, probably) we have no real idea who we are opening our tree for.

If Genes pursue with their current policy, they should make it impossible for someone to ask for a tree to be opened like that without their tree being open to us first. And if the person refuses to open their tree, they should be made to write to us properly, stating where and when and who and how there might be a connection.

I don't think I understand what you're saying? what new policy?

Rose. The automatic default for asking if a hot match is hotter than Iceland's cabinets is now to send a bland "open your tree" request. No idea why, and other person's tree is not usually open to us.

It forces us to enter into dialogue rather than other way round.

That's how I understand it. I just open my tree now as I can't be bothered to check out why they want to see it. Only happening now about once a week anyway. If you don't open your tree, they are straight on here saying how rude and unfriendly we all are. :-0

oh right, well I don't open my tree to anyone who can't give me a good idea of where the link might be so won't worry me :-)

John, we simply can't demand that someone opens their tree for us - nor can we force anyone to divulge any information from their tree if they don't wish to tell us.

Just because we may share a common heritage does not give us the automatic right to tree share.

By 'new policy' do you mean the default wording when you send a pm to a contact? If so I, like many others on here, will delete the wording add our own more dulcet tones.

I'm the same Rose.

If I opened my tree to all requests I received, then my family's details would be all over the net by now!

I always check connections before allowing access and, when a connected tree is opened for me, I don't automatically add their details. I take note and do my own verification as I was caught out by not verifying when I first started my research. Very frustrating it was too!!

I don't think I have ever had anyone tell me I am rude for not opening my tree to them.

I never use the default wording, always use my own more polite requests. But it is absolutely ages since I have had a request to open my tree. Which I don't do. I ascertain the alleged connection and if it is a correct one I send details of that part of my tree. :-) I have never been accused of being rude.

Surprised at the response.
Always willing to help but 2K contacts on GR and 110K tree entries, cannot spend time on thoise 'fishing'

Not sure it is fishing, Raymond. The few that contact me are new posters and really think if they have a John Smith born 1850 Jarrow and you also have a John Smith born 1850 (in the Punjab but they don't know that) that is must be a hot match.

I just think it is inexperience. :-D

But I have decided to ignore requests from now unles I recognise the name of the person they think might be a hot match. And I only have 23k tree, so am a bit of a novice myself evidently ;-)
