morning all,
just wondering if anyone can explain how/why someone's birth can be registered 4 times, circa 1939/40?
one registration was even dated before the person was actually born! (registered jan/feb/march quarter,1940)
yet the other 3 birth registrations were in july aug sept. 1940,?
I am flummoxed, but waiting for birth certificate to come which may explain..

One could be that it was indexed in the wrong quarter and year,,,,,,,the others could be becasue the parents wasnt married ,so one appearing under the mothers maiden name and one under the surname of he father,,,,the fourth could be after the parents married?
or 3 could be a mistake at the General Register Office......?

maybe even a child born with the same names and combined surnames in the same place....?

it was at the start of the war so anything was possible with much happening,

I too was going to suggest that at least one of these birth is just a coincidence of another child with same name etc.

I have a whole family of Harrison's in London and when I still had my tree on here would regularly get 'hot matctches' for them for an identically named familly in Yorkshire somewhere. It was truly amazing, parents same names (including maiden name of mother) and all the children 'up north' were named and aged the same, the only difference is that my family had a few more children.

:-)

Sometimes FreeBMD transcribe the same records twice. In that case the vol & page numbers should be the same.

so interesting ,
in my research the mothers maiden name/district was identical in each registration,
but the index pages were completely different.
plus one identified the page as D, not sure what that means. I have sent for one of the certificates.
sadly there is no one left to ask.

Well the one with a D in the page means that was an amendment done in Dec probably of the same year.

Most likely the fathers name was added to the birth record after the marriage

thanks for helpful advice, particularly for the D,
still wondering how a birth could have been registered before the actual event, maybe I will just have to assume that somehow it was an error somewhere along the line!

Someone in my office shows as registered twice, in succeeding quarters.
She has a unique name, so no possibility of it being two people.

very helpful replies, thank you.
it appears odd that the mother of the child, registered 4 times, has added her maiden name as a name totally different than it was at the time,
in fact she wasn't married until at least four years later which resulted in a married name.
guess I will just have to accept that for whatever reason, one that I can never understand, names and dates were altered for personal reasons. oh well, time to move on!
