As I stood rinsing a bowl of pulses I'd had in soak over night, I wondered if anyone, other than our Vegetatian friends on here, used them, these days.
I often do, when making soups and stews, in particular Pearl Barley when making Shin Beef and Pearl Barley.
They are good for you, and are a very good thickening agent.

I do..don't think a home made veg soup is quite the same without them.....the way I was brought up...so easy but these days Im afraid a lot go for quicker options...just a simple thing like remembering to soak overnight.
It's certainly the weather for this sort of food!

Ha ha! I thought you were asking if anyone still had a pulse - 'losing the will to live' - after recent 'events' LOLOL

Pulses cover such a broad range of peas, beans and lentils. I find red lentils thicken up very nicely when left to stand - good idea to let them thicken before eating to avoid the 'podge' LOL
I use a pressure cooker after soaking those that need it for about an hour.

Good morning me dear :-D How's you?

I made baked beans for the village lunch last year. Eight hours in a slow cooker after the overnight soak but it was well worth the effort.

I'm sure people think the overnight soak and the cooking time will take up far tpp much of theor time but you don't have to watch them soak or cook. It doesn't actually take up much more of your own time than opening a tin and heating it on the stove.

You have to soak them? Ahhhh. I wondered why my soup was so crunchy. Thanks for that.

Brenda, wouldn't dream of making soup without them, and make very satisfying soups for this time of year.
Island, I is okey, how's you.
I have many different types in my store cupboard for the various things you can make with them.
Sharron, didn't know you could make your own baked beans. Now ther'es a thought.
Eldrick, you are a wag.

Noooooo, I was thinking about making pies FOR puppies, not with them!

Poor little puppies, bless.

You are reminding me of that singer in Father Ted who was going off to look after an injured puppy and look what was wrong with him!
