If the birth is after 1912 then the mother's maiden name will be on Freebmd.
You might be able to get away without having to buy the actual certificate.

You need to buy it from the GRO

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

You cannot view birth, death or marriage certs online, unfortunately, although you can order them. Do NOT pay more than £9.25 I think it is by using another website to do it. Use the GRO direct, or your local register office may be able to help.

You can buy the birth certificate - that's the only way to see what is written on it.

could anyone help me I am new to this and have success tracing my ancestors through my mothers side, however my fathers side remains a mystery. I know h is year of birth and his fathers name and mothers first name but how do i view a birth record with all this info on, I can see the birth registered but i would like to view the actual birth cert. so I can learn more about my grandparents and family on that side. :-|
