According to the Metro newspaper, Dinah Sheridan has died.

She was the wife of a very famous actor Jimmy Hanley ("Blue Lamp" and he was in every other film from about 1940 till his death from cancer in (Edit) 1970, aged 51) and they had a beautiful daughter Jenny Hanley who was on Magpie.

Dinah was a star of Genevieve and the Railway Children and was so beautiful. Quintessential English rose, yet her father was Russian (surname Ginsberg) and her mother was German. Also she and Jimmy were parents of Sir Jeremy Hanley who was a Tory MP and brother of Jenny. Think she had 3 younger children from later marriages.

I seem to remember she was the wife of Tony Britton (father of Fern) in Don't Wait Up recently (Nigel Havers was their son?).

Very upset to hear she had died. She was 92, which was great shock. She seemed to be one of those lovely ladies who would be there for a long time yet.

I put it as a question because I knew she was the mother of somebody but was not sure who.

Jimmy died in 1970. Used to see him and his daughter, Jenny, in my home town.

Loved the film The Railway Children.

Jimmy was quite active in 1960's in programmes some may remember:

Jim's Inn (1957–1963, ITV advertising programme) as host
Five O'Clock Club (1963–1966, ITV children's programme) as host
Futurama (1964, ITV children's science programme) as host
Crossroads (1966, ITV soap) as Jimmy Gudgeon, old friend of central character Meg Richardson (played by Noele Gordon)
