Basically I've been looking at monies left to family members on Ancestry Wills & Probate but when it says £6 in 1905, I know its not the same as now but does anyone know a good web site that could tell me what that equates to in today market?

I'm seeing over a £1000 in 1945 & knowing what my dad bought for his house is alot of money at that time but I've got nothing to compare it to if that make sense?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks & best wishes.
Jo

I find this site useful -

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-1633409/Historic-inflation-calculator-value-money-changed-1900.html

A 1000 pound is worth 34,860 pound now.

I always think of these will comparisons in terms of house prices. That is our largest asset usually.

If someone died in 1900 in , say, Chester, leaving £600, I think to myself he could have bought 2 nice houses or 4 terraced houses for that much. In 1950, you would have needed to leave £6,000 to have the same "wealth". And nowadays it would be at least £300,000.
