Jane
I am suffering with the same problem at the moment. Used to wear a splint but couldn't do my job as metal strip in the middle kept hitting the typewriter keys. Now I use a crepe bandage especially when trying to iron but am going to ask my Rheumatologist nurse for a splint when I see her in December. Really could do with one now.
I know it's no help to you in your quest but someone else might come up with a suggestion.

Hope your pain is soon eased.

HI jane,

Which joint in your thumb is affected? Mine is the first below the nail on left hand and both joints on right hand.

I have a splint for the whole thumb but with the wrist support it's uncomfortable.

You know how much pressure you can bear on the joint and whether it needs to be straight or flexed to ease the pain.

TBH I'd try making own to start with. Stretchy tubular stockinet then tape over with adhesive bandage. Once you find what's comfortable and still gives you use of the thumb you can look at preformed splints.

Good luck

Sue it is the joint near the wrist .'tis a bugg**.I think I need my thumb straight as that is the way I tend to hold it.Looks like I am giving the thumbs up sign all the time lol

Hi Jane
I have arthritis in the lower joint of my right thumb (fleshy bit)

I was advised against wearing a pre formed splint by my Hospital Consultant, as it stops you bending it at all & so would become stiff.

I do what Sue advises using Tubigrip when it gets really painful & swollen.

lolol Jane, good job you don't have it in 1st and 2nd fingers then ;-)

I'd give the self help method a go first and extend the bandaging down and around the base of your hand but only to support not restrict it.

Tubigrip it is then :- ...I have found the heat patches that fit in a pouch around the wrist very good.I wiggle them down a little further towards the thumb lol and have found I do get a lot of pain relief .
Thanks everyone for your advice.I'll give you all the thumbs up ;-) ;-)

Top of my shopping list for tomorrow is Tubigrip.I have plenty here but it only fits my son's big knee :-S
