Viewing Other Trees

I'm getting SO frustrated with GR!!!!!!

I've had a big moan before this, about having 73 pages of other trees to trawl through. NOT 73 trees, but 73 PAGES of trees!! It takes ages to find the one I'm looking for.

I've suggested to GR that they use (obvious to me) A-Z rather than the number of trees.

I don't have the 73 pages problem any more.

I opened my GR tree, because I wanted to check on information on ANOTHER tree.

Clicked on "Other Trees"

What did I find?

I don't have 73 pages any more.

I have access to ONE tree - MINE!!!!

I'm am SO fed up with all the bugs on here. I renewed my subscription a few weeks ago, now I feel like asking for a refund.

:-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P

I've just tried mine Scozz. I clicked on 'Trees shared with me' and they appeared.

All 104 pages of them!

I want to delete many of them but that is proving difficult. Am off to read the blog in case there is some new info there.

Have just checked Scozz.

It isn't a bug - there is information on the FAQs page. Well worth a read but you need time to digest it all.

I had my 73 pages yesterday.

I wish they'd stop messing about

:-P

LadyScozz Report 31 Oct 2012 09:57

Right.......... they've been messing about again.

I have to keep changing the % when I use this site - when I add a name to my tree I have to reduce to 75% or I can't get to the SAVE button.

So...... if I leave it on 75% (which I had when looking at my tree) the font is tiny. I didn't see the "Trees Shared With Me"

So I clicked on that..... and got a list.

I don't have 73 pages, I now have 147 pages!!!

What's wrong with the OBVIOUS A-Z??????????????

I looked at FAQ (That's a good word!!) but saw nothing that would lead me to "view other trees" and frankly, I can't be bothered hunting for things on this shambles any more.

It is A-Z, isn't it? :-S Admittedly by first name which can be a pain if you can only remember the surname.

There is also a box to type a contact's name in when you are looking at 'other trees shared with me' which auto sorts as you type. But then again, it will only work if you can remember their first name.

When the Tree Dashboard was first uploaded, there were 20 tree names to a page; now there are 10. That 'might' be why we now have double the original number of pages.

LadyScozz Report 1 Nov 2012 05:41

Det - if you have A-Z you may only have a few other trees to look at. I have 173 pages. NOT 173 trees. If there are 10 names to a page I have over 1700 trees on my list. Many of them I don't look at, but there's no way of deleting them. I've tried contacting the owners, but no response, they've either lost interest or left the planet.

I still don't understand WHY I have to have a list 147 pages!!! Why not 26?

OK, there are more than 10 people on my list of other trees with names starting with A........ we could have A, then Ab Ac Ad etc.

If I'm looking for a tree belonging to (say) Michael Smith, where do I start? page 63? 75?

An ALPHABETICAL list make sense.

Then there's the absolute nonsense with women's surnames. BOTH married and maiden names are used. One is on the list when you do a search, the other is the owner of the tree you view from YOUR tree.

This is just ridiculous.

I regret renewing my subscription.

I've had one contact since June!

I prefer to use 'My Contacts' to open trees that I have been given access to as it is far more flexible and easier to find what you are looking for.

It's search facility will find either the names of the member you have been in contact with and / or the tree relation that you fist made contact with. It works on both first and last names too.

If you are no longer interested in a particular contact then delete it. This should also remove your access to their tree and it will disappear from the list.

Cynthia

Unfortunately, IGP, that is not the case.

It's easy enough to delete Contacts but, their tree remains firmly rooted!

Scozz. This link will take you to the FAQ page on Viewing other trees - as well as general guidelines to tree use. It may be worth taking the time to look at it.

By the way. 73 trees or 173? :-S

So does the fact it says My Trees on the dashboard mean that we are about to have multiple trees any day soon?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Nov 2012 10:06

I've 18 pages so that's, what, 180 trees open to me?

You do have a point about the female married or maiden surname, so perhaps that's why they are listed alphabetically by first name.

Taking your example of the mythical Michael Smith. When I start to type 'Mi' it auto sorts to
Michael F**,
Michele S**,
Michelle M**

The surnames aren't alphabetical, but the first names are - I've only got one Michael

I have 4 x Ann which are listed as
Ann B**
Ann H**
Ann Pe**
Ann Pr**

So in that instance, the surnames by alphabet come into play.

If the auto sort doesn't help when you have access to a large number of trees, it would be interesting to hear what 'The Team' have to say

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 1 Nov 2012 11:31

Perhaps deleting a contact only removes their access to your tree - not the other way around.

Anyone know?

Wish I did IGP. Wish I did......sigh. I've put a message on Phil's blog and hope he will get back to me.

Joy Report 1 Nov 2012 13:20

I told Phil about it a while ago; he has it on his (increasing?) list of things to get sorted.

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 1 Nov 2012 23:23

I think I have 27 Margarets........... it takes AGES to find the right tree! That's just an example.

I've started keeping notes of who I'm in contact with, women's maiden & married names.

It would be simpler if GR listed both!

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 2 Nov 2012 08:17

Look at Phil's blog Stephen and you will see who he is. Click on Community and the blogs are listed at the bottom.

I am not particularly computer literate either. I have simply played about with things and learnt as I have gone along. I am training myself to look at and learn from guidelines.

My life with the tree on here will be a lot easier when I can delete unwanted trees. I have oodles with the name Margaret as well Scozz and I would imagine most of them have absolutely nothing to do with my tree. Meanwhile, perhaps I should be spending more time making a note of who is, in fact, connected to me. It may save time later.

Many sites undergo periodic changes - it's called keeping up to date which, in this day and age of technology is very necessary. Ancestry has just been altering their site and, of course, members are complaining.
