Shoe spikes for icy weather

A certain store from abroad - Li*l - is advertising shoe spikes from Monday, at only £5.99 I hope I will be in time to get some before they sell out as since my fall a few years back I am nervous of going out on icy days especially as this road doesn't have pavements, the builders mis measured the plots and so there is no space for pavements in the cul-de-sac. These ones fit over shoes size 4 to 11 and have three spikes in the heels, as well as spikes on the soles, so they should be better for me as I walk hard on my heels and that's why I fell, my heels went from under me on a road covered with black ice.

I think I might have done some dancing as I fell on the ice so will be happy not to perform in the spikes lol

I never want to see another snowflake! The only ice I want to see will be in a glass with something nice to drink!

Very content living in the sub-tropics now.

I would agree with that, would love to live somewhere warmer.

My sister bought me some last year - then we had no snow!!!
If we get snow this year, I'm changing my strategy.
As I walk to work in snowy weather (no gritting and no buses when it snows) I usually manage to walk in on the first day of snow - when the powers that be at work declare it a 'snow day' and those who can't get in have a free days leave.

HOWEVER, I usually can't get in the second day because the snow has been compacted and turned to ice - but by the 3rd day, grit on car tyres means I can usually walk in again.

BUT, although I managed to get in on the 'snow day', this isn't appreciated and I lose a days leave for not turning up the second day.
No-one appears to realise that compacted snow is impossible to walk on.

This year, if we get snow I won't even attempt to get to work. If I have to lose a days leave, I may as well take the 'free' days leave as well and have 2 days at home.

:-D :-D

Don't blame you Maggie, you get ripped off enough by your works anyway don't you? (wage freeze if you will excuse the pun)

I remember years ago when I was in my late teens, had a long walk to work as no direct bus route. I went out one snowy morning, watery slush in gutter outside my Mum's house (I was still living at home then) and slipped off the pavement into the slush. Went back in to change clothes and managed to do exactly the same again, I gave up and have a blanket day (was before duvets were 'in' ) lol

Hope everyone can stay warm and dry and safe this coming winter, I think we are in for a tough one.

Back in Dec 2008 we had snow on a Tuesday not too bad but on Wednesday it was a skating rink. I went over and broke my tibia. Now petrified of going out in the snow.

Wonder if worth the train journey to my nearest store

We have some lovely members on this site.

Got a message from Purple Diamond this morning offering to get me a pair of shoe spikes and forward them to me.

Thank you Liz for your very kind offer,

I have them too, they are brilliant, when I walk my ickle foster dog :), which is 3 times a day they are perfect for the icy weather.....

I got mine on ebay last year, worth every penny and would recommend them for safety and that little extra piece of mind when you are walking :-)

I bought some last year but have yet to try them out - I'm all geared up for snow - stuff to dissolve the snow, spikes and a windscreen cover for the car

if we get a dose of what the USA has I should be well prepared - we usually get what they have about four or five days later

It wasn't a bustle I needed when I fell, it was a crash helmet or a thick woolly hat! Normally in winter I do wear hats of various styles but on this occasion it wasn't that cold and the snow had stopped falling so I didn't bother with a hat, it's only a five minute walk to the supermarket from here. As I crossed the road home with two bags of groceries, I was thinking about the meal I was about to prepare and cook and wasn't concentrating on the road, so didn't spot the black ice. As I walked over the rise in the middle of the road my heels went from under me and I couldn't stop myself going down hitting the back of my head on the very hard road surface covered with ice. People rushed to help me up before I got run over by a car and one girl recognised me as living in the same street as her so she kindly walked me home with another lady carrying the shopping.
I was really shaken up and went to a walk in centre because the snow was coming down again heavily and o.h. was only just in from work. I didn't want him to have to drive all the 8 miles to the hospital but in a way I wished I had as I would have rather been checked over more than the walk in centre did.
Later I suffered lots of headaches and feeling 'away with the fairies' and my GP said I had post concussion syndrome which lasted for months.
Hence me wanting to feel safer this winter.

If you use a walking stick, take the rubber piece off the bottom, stick a couple of nails through it and replace it, it digs into the ice and helps a little. :-)
