Does anybody else tend to not return to establishments that serve enormous portions?

I don't like wasting food, especially when I have paid catering prices for it, but there is often not much you can do with doggy bagged food when you get home, especially the extra three portions of chips that are piled upon the plate.

The child's portion would be more than adequate for a meal during the day but that is only available to people who are under twelve generally.

I find these huge portions quite daunting. Having decided where to start, once inroads have been made, it becomes an endurance event to eat what you have paid for.

Maybe that is just something else we are trying to copy the Americans with .

I tend to return if I have enjoyed the food, found the service acceptable and of course cost, if its good value for money :-D

OH could happily struggle through a plate piled high with food, and want to return there again. If/when faced with that situation, I concentrate on the protein and veggies, leaving most of the carbohydrates.

Mind you, the piled plate is better than 3 peas, a julienne of carrots and a teaspoon of fish surrounded by a dribble of jus on an octagonal plate :-0

:-D Detective so true.
My nephews wedding reception was like that, it was at midday & many of us had set off early in the morning.

The fish & chip shop down the road did a roaring trade that afternoon ;-)

Sharron Report 14 Oct 2012 10:58

We have a fish and chip wagon come to the village once a week where the small portion of chips is huge.

I don't really like chips so one small portion does three people and my six chips.

Now this puts off some pensioners from buying a meal from him because they waste so much if they can find nobody to share with.

I don't really understand the reasoning behind serving these enormous portions.

I bet I know who will explain it to me.

hi sharron,
i agree with you, hugh plate fulls are a turn off, 20 years ago in the usa 4 of us asked for a banana split each, the waitress did look surprised and when it came we could see why.....4 hugh banana,s on each dish, 8 lumps of ice cream and enough choclate sauce to float a boat in. and before anyone ask's,no we did not eat it all. when we asked the waitress why she didn't warn us how big they were ,the answer was "i though you knew". :-S

Have they tried asking for a smaller portion Sharron, the wagon that used to come to our village was happy to put fewer chips in as it meant they did not have to cook as many thus increasing their profits.

The problem is that one size does not fit all.

I'm 5ft 6in, I walk the dog each day and do pilates once a week but otherwise have a mostly sedentary lifestyle. Therefore I'll need a smaller portion than someone who is 6ft 3in, plays sport on a regular basis and exercises every day.

The problem for cafes/restaurants is they can't give everyone the exact size portion they need. I suspect they probably play safe and go for the larger size portion, assuming that those who don't need as much will leave what they don't need.

Of course that last bit doesn't always happen but that's another thread.

Yesterdays evening meal for 2-
1 large and 1 small cod, and 1 large chips.

If 3 people are in - 2 large cod and 1 large chips. 1 of the cod is split 2 ways while OH grumbles that the chips have to go 3 ways. :-D

Although not being caught out in quite the same way as Iris, the size of the meals in some US restaurants was a shock, and I did rant to OH about the waste. We were told that most people asked for doggy bags, but that's not something you can really do if you are staying in a hotel. We were too full from the main course to ever consider a dessert!

I am not really chippist but the bulking agent of these huge meals is often chips.

Big hulking beefcakes usually need extra protein,

Morning All :-D

There is a popular restaurant near where I live that serves excellent food and has very good menus.
I love going there but recently have found too much food on my plate, sounds daft but imo it's a turn off,and any meal asked for comes with chips, rice, pasta and salad! I have asked for just one of the options but when my meal comes there they all are and I just feel so guilty when food is wasted.
On holiday in Canada, a few years back, I ordered pancakes with maple syrup, asked if I wanted adult or junior, when I said adult the waitress advised junior, good job I took her advice as even then I rec. six pancakes :-0....delish....but couldn't eat 'em all :-(

There's so much waste in this world it's just crazy!
