I still do the Take a Break comps and any others I spot, but haven't won anything for a while, altho I did get £50 for a spot the snap TAB competition last year I think it was.

Wend you can do a lot of the tv competitons online as well so they don't cost anything.

I wish I had the energy I used to have, when I could rush about and do so much in a day, now I haven't the energy to do that much in a week!

I miss long involved conversations with my Dad. We could talk about everything but mostly about long gone family and he was amazingly accurate with names, dates etc. He was very well read and he had such a lot of general knowledge. He and my mother travelled a lot so he would talk about the places they'd been and the things they saw. After 6 years I can still think of things I would like to ask him.

Purple, well done on the £50 win. There are no competitions to so here but ubtil you just said in your post I never thought about looking online.

SueMaid was it the talks with your dad about past family that started you on doing your family tree.

Yes it was, Wendy - he knew all his grandparents' names and even one of his great grandparents. He knew all his uncles and their wives too which was amazing because his father was one of 15 children.

I never look back at what I had, but consider myself lucky at the things I have now that I couldn't have as a child.:
My spending money was always less than my peers.
I wasn't allowed to have the light on in my bedroom to read. Bedtime meant 'get yer head down'.
Had to be in by a set time.
Boring meals which were the same on the set day. I appreciate that our parents and grandparents were just thankful for food.
No comics because my mother thought that there were silly words in the pictures e.g. 'pow' 'splat' 'eeeeeeeeeeeeeee'.
I now buy magazines, choose my food, put the light on in the middle of the night....and the television, listen to Radio 5 live if I so choose, as loud as I want.Leave books on top on the bed so in the middle of the night there is a bang when something drops on the floor, and I think 'yeah' .If I go out to meet a friend I come home when I feel like it.
Memories are all well and good but if there is something better about the present then that is truly a blessing and as they say lifes what you make it.-jl

I miss being able to do things on the spur of the moment. I was able to pop out and visit friends, go for a long walk, go shopping, pictures, swimming etc.

Now I have to plan everything before hand, can't walk very far (or fast) and can't stand for long either.

I am now waiting for a decorator to paint a reception room for me.

In the "old days" I would have done it myself... sometimes after a visit to the pub!

To me the computer is a godsend. I do most of my travelling via the internet.
Would be rather bored without it.

I also miss having a memory in full working order.

Janet, thank you for reminding me about some of the good things that I have aquired since childhood. Especially having freedom of choice.

Hi Janet...what a good post, I had never thought about things 'the other way round' it also makes me think about the saying about wanting to give your children the things you never had.

But I still miss the figure I had when I was about 18 :-( :-)

lol- Tenerife Sun to the figure of an 18 y o......but my daughter bought me a hula hoop for my last birthday and I think it is absolutely brilliant.

They were all the rage when I was about 9. Needless to say I didn't have one but I had a good friend who shared hers with me. It took a bit of getting into the rhythm again but eventually it all came back. I hide it behind the dresser because I like to keep it handy. Again in days gone by it would have to be kept in my bedroom or somewhere out of the way. Now I can keep it just where I want.

Incidently I have just been told this week about a 30 + something who has had really bad back pain and the excercise with the hula hoop is the first thing that has finally offered some relief. -jl
