M.I.L used to make a macaroni cheese that came out of the oven like a brick but it tasted good

Years ago Mum used a packet of minestrone soup to make spag bol but they changed the receipe of the soup so that does not work now

I vowed never to have a sunday roast ever again after I left home at 18. My Mum bless her was a good cook but for some reason liked he veg on a Sunday well done :0) I didnt realise that veg were not supposed to be mushy until I left home.

In the 38 years since I have never ever cooked roast on a Sunday (other days yes but not Sundays) :)

Oh I forgot her rice pudding was so thick it had to be almost cut with a knife and made soft again with evaporated milk!!!

Mum, bless her wasn't much of a cook, but her pastry and stews were wonderful.

Pastry I had no problem with but spent years trying to get my stews the same as mum's.

Dumplings light and fluffy, meat so tender it fell apart but the gravy was always disappointing.

Mum often came to stay as I always lived miles from her. Once when she stayed it got cold and I suggested a stew but warned her I couldn't get the gravy right, she laughed. She told me to buy a tin of oxtail soup. :-0

Had no problem since. :-D

When I make food my mother used to make it tastes different because I don't buy a packet mix for everything you can think of.

Once we acquired a freezer it was filled with frozen everything available, including frozen bubble and squeak so help me!

That when you cook something your Mum used to make it never tastes quite the same?

Is it because my Mum did everything the hard way, no food mixers/processors. pastry all made by hand, cakes beaten by hand. No pressure cookers or slow cookers etc.

I used to love visiting my Mum after we were married, going into the house when Sunday lunch was cooking. The smell was mouth watering.

Or is it just the memory plays tricks?
