You're right about the winkle pickers Ann we were told "they're bad for your feet" :-|...but would we listen? result.....my big toes have definite curve :-(.......when in shoe shop recently I suggested to a young girl not to wear pointy toed shoes....but would she listen? ;-) :-D
I also wore shift/sack dresses during pregnancy and at work would 'run one up' on sewing machine during lunchtime :-D

1956 - I wore an outfit I loved - bright red duffle coat, navy slacks and bright pink fluorescent socks with navy ballet shoes. I thought I was the bees knees!

What about the reversable circular skirts? Pointed shoes? I always bought a size larger and stuffed the toe with cotton wool.

At different times...witches britches,culottes,tartan pleated skirts,the blonde hairpieces which made your hair look more bouffant and thicker,
teased hair,and last but not least,the worst fashion crime of all,white lipstick.I shudder when I think of it!!!

Also,I had a bright yellow jumper,and black pants,I looked like a bumble bee!

I had a soft pale blue short-sleeved summer top with a smocked bodice and an elastic waist in 1966, and later I remember a bone trenchcoat which I wore a lot,then later a red leather knee-length coat,and a shorter mustard leather coat, which was hand-made for me at a wholesale leather shop.

Slacks, I was not allowed to wear trousers until I was 17/18 and then I just bought them myself, but was not popular. (Common according to my mother).

I remember the fluorescent socks got mixed up with my daughter in the 80's. Then they wore odd colours. My friend had a circular skirt. She called it her 'ole' skirt. Seem to remember those skirts were worn with flat ballerina type shoes.

I do remember the hooped underskirts but think they were used more for brides and bridesmaid's dresses. My memory may not serve me well on that one perhaps there was a hoop in my beloved net underskirt.

I have one of those photographs with the 'perm'. It was about 1975 only I wasn't 14! Mine always came out too tight as they never allowed for the fact that my hair had a bit of a kink anyway. Looked nice when it 'dropped' a bit
Well I thought so anyway. Usedto comb it with one of those big toothed combs.

Not so much sensible Ann - did not like sore feet!!! Plus my mother yelling she had spent a fortune over the years making sure my shoes were properly fitt!

Slacks I made them myself - Herself also said they were common but Daddy liked them. Some circular skirts were made of felt with rick rack braid around the hemline.

However mine was like a grosgrain taffeta - black on one side, deep turqoise on the reverse. I can recall about 17/18 having a very vivid pink polo necked ribbed sweater, I had matching lipstick and nail polish and I bought a pair of cheap large white circular ear rings and painted with nail varnish. I thought I was lovely until my Dad - home from sea came mincing out of the diningroom with 2 oranges stuck up his front. the yell of MUUUUUUUUUUUUUM! went up.

Now you mention it Chris I vaguely remember having a black taffeta circular skirt. I couldn't jive but I think that is when they were popular when jiving first became so popular. But worn with ballerina pumps I think.

does any one remember the puff dress or skirt(think thats what it was called)made a 7stone teenager look about 20stone,
i had one and it was white.wore it with red stiletto"s ,big red hoop earrings and a red clutch bag.and a thick plastic red belt...and massive hair.oh god i must have looked a sight. :-)

My knitted shift dress was a disaster!! When you sat in it for half an hour and then stood up it kept the shape of your bottom when sitting down and stuck out behind......and it itched like mad. Oh and fringed bell bottoms with actual bells on!! lol I had some red tartan trews too.

Flared jeans/trousers. I had an olive green pair, I unpicked the outside seams from the knee down and inserted a triangular piece of contasting colour matrial to make the flares bigger. lol
