And of course it may have not been a speed camera but a ANPR device.

Carol, You are correct in your statement,

Speed in itself is not that dangerous, inappropriate speed, driving too fast for the conditions, driving at speeds beyond your own ability is

But i do have issue with the statement that speeding kills because it is never the only factor in any accident,
Government research does not support that theory,

The speed limits where introduced for a reason is also correct,

When speed limits where introduced at the level they are today vehicles where very primitive in relation to today's vehicles,

The car industry have improved vehicles over the years with both passenger and pedestrian safety in mind

It's about time that the driving qualifications and speed limit's where looked at as a whole

It's pointless to focus on the minority cause of accidents such as speed whilst ignoring the main problem which governments own research shows lies with driver error through lack of awareness, ability, and concentration

Roy

edit, also Carol, driving at a speed over that stated for that road is likely to increase the likelihood/severity of an accident?

The same is true for vehicles driving at a speed that is too slow for the speed limit of certain stretches of road can also cause accidents

Just a few points, Lots of Accidents?? are not caused by Speeding/bad driving/roads etc. but by inconsiderate people stepping mindlessly into the roads with out looking, cyclists doing the same and others so intent on listening to music via headphones /mobile phones etc.they just wander aimlessly along without a care in the world.yet it always seems to be drivers who get the blame. this is not always true **M**.

GRMarilyn

GRMarilyn Report 20 May 2012 14:09

Most Accidents are caused by excessive speed...

Speeding is a deliberate act......ignoring the dangers.

Smile ....and ....Pay up !! ....that what I say .. :-S

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 20 May 2012 14:18

Speeding Does not cause "most" accidents,
And it's not about paying up,

as i said the general public have been led to believe that speeding causes accidents when their own research taken from police forces through out the UK clearly shows it not to be the case,
I have researched this for the last 15 years and their is no evidence to support these claims

Don't take my word for it do your own research

Roy...

If your speeding and are trying to avoid an accident its inevitable an accident WILL happen ..Common sense !!

As for paying up ....if you are CAUGHT speeding then you HAVE to pay up !!!!!!

My research is my husbands resource as a Traffic Policeman for 26 years oh I could go on about all the heart breaking stories of road traffic accidents that my husband has attended......Mainly through Speeding ....and of course other situations ..

So don't tell me otherwise .... :-S

I am not a speeder i stick to speed limits, i have been a professional driver for over 30 years and a driver for 40 years with an average of 150,000 miles per year under my belt and i have never been pulled for speeding or any other offence my licence is and always has been as clean as a whistle

My research does not come from one persons experience? but from official records submitted from police forces through out the UK over a 10 year period.

Roy

GRMarilyn Report 20 May 2012 15:24

I never said YOU were a speeder....ughh

My Licence is clean too .....driving for 47yrs !!

Never had a accident.....ever :-)

Hope I never will......

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 20 May 2012 15:27

She is right there Roy......in a way .....speed DOES kill

BUT IT IS motion THAT DOES THE DAMAGE

there have been several cases lately where children have been killed
by a car reversing out of a garage............2 mph?
and another woman by her OWN car because the handbrake wasnt applied and the carr rolled over her

ChAoTicintheNewYear

ChAoTicintheNewYear Report 20 May 2012 15:28

If you hit a person while driving at 40mph they are more likely to die than if you hit them at 30mph.

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 20 May 2012 15:32

ChAoTic

its better if they were not in a position to be hit.

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 20 May 2012 15:37

ya can dress it up anyhow you like, speed DOES, and HAS killed,

GRMarilyn

GRMarilyn Report 20 May 2012 15:52

Thank you Stray..Bob & ChAolic,

Never have I been so livid at someone suggesting that Speed does not kill.

Now that's not me to get angry..... I have never had an angry word to say on any thread all the time I have been a member .....but I do have common sense & some knowledge of accidents that has been told to me with tears in my eyes over the years with Speeders & can I say Drink drivers...

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 20 May 2012 15:52

Bob, It comes back to my original question,

What is speed?

any movement has a speed? walking, pace is speed,

If Speeding was to blame then why do traffic police not enforce when a speeder doing 80mph on a motorway? when the speed limit is 70mph
surely if speeding was the problem their would be zero tolerance and the limit would be enforced

or is it because the police actually no the truth

When two objects meet and one is either stationary or moving at a different speed or in a different direction then some one or something is going to be damaged?

My post's on this subject are not designed to justify speed or speeding but just to inform people that speed or speeding is not the real problem and government have used it to mask the real reason behind the vast majority of accidents

If less than 14% of accidents have speed as a factor in accidents then it's correct that they should do some thing about that,

But if 65% of accidents have "driver error or reaction" as the main cause

It's not rocket science for them to no where the blame lies

Roy

Edit; If your speeding and are trying to avoid an accident its inevitable an accident WILL happen ..Common sense !!

nothing to do with Common sense?

if speeding then an accident is more likley depending on other contributary factors, Like road and weather conditions, ability and the like

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 20 May 2012 16:29

Stray, nothing to do with dressing it up?

Just stating facts

The resources government spend on the speed campaign is disproportionate and does not reflect their own data

To my mind driver education and improvement is were they should be focused because thats what their own data shows

but as usual they have gone for the cheaper option

Roy
