Hi Robert
I know the house but never knew it was a childrens' home (*hangs head)

Many moons ago I went to a party at a house in the Terrace,it had huge rooms and very high ceilings and of course a beautiful view too :-D

Yes Mau, the Home was on the seafront overlooking Cullercoats Bay beside the navigation lights just along from Mast Lane towards the Church.

Hi Robert......yes NE childrens' society is a very old charity and does lots of good work/support for the disadvantaged.
Was the home by the Bay?

Vera glad you've enjoyed the trip down memory lane :-D

Mau

I loved the one of the little girl swinging on the lamp post. We did that in our street as late as the 50's. I do remember the old quayside. Not as it is now but I didn't know about the selling of clothes. I thought maybe they were sorting them for laundry.

I remember going to the fair on the 'town moor' on one occasion. It was huge and I think it was held in what was called Race Week.

Also used to go to your part of the world. Over the Tyne Tunnel and either a bus or sometimes walked to the Ice Rink. We were never in in those days and alll with little pocket money.

Thanks for stirring old memories.

There was also a Childrens Home on the sea front at Cullercoats run by the North East Childrens Society (now called Children North East) but this closed some years ago.

ZZzzz Report 3 Apr 2012 00:49

Yes I have seen the pictures thank you and have also been to the library to see if there is a register of children, but at the time they had not finished gathering the info, so will be up there later this year to see if it is done yet.

One of my Lamberts is Kathleen Rose, from Wales I think, I'll check it out and let you know.

I would love to be able to take photos for you if it was possible.
Just remember St Oswalds was quite an imposing building and I used to go in there when I was connected to St George's parish church in Cullercoats.

I'll visit the local library and see if I can find more info.for you,but good picture of it on the site given.

Mau xx

btw. I have Lamberts connected to my family....

Wow thanks Mauonthecoast, you are the only person apart from Mum who has spoken about it, she was there from 1927 ish til whatever age they had to leave, I don't suppose I will ever know the full story, i.e. who put her in there but I do know why, hey hoo I will make the journey up there again and see if there is any info about who put her there, how it was run etc. :-D

Hi Susan I remember St Oswald's very well.It was on a corner of the road where I lived and grew up.

It was still used in the fifties by (if I recall correctly) the YMCA.

There was also a Barnardo's home built on Beaconsfield across from our house. The sea on one side and railway lines on the other. It was originally for boys.
Here's a lovely picture/description of this home....the area was a smashing place to live.....Happy days on the beach :-D

I really don't know if it was church run or not, she said very little about it but it certainly fits the bill, thank you :-)

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 2 Apr 2012 21:34

shouldnt be too hard to tack it down - was it a church run place? The only one I know of was on Mast lane, which probably fits that description.

My Mum grew up in an orphanage in Cullercoats, she said she could see the sea from one side of the dormitory and the railway from the other, obviously long gone now, but would be nice if anyone could help me to pin point it if possible.
