Mine was done with a local and was fine. It has grown back but took a year.
Make sure you ask for some strong painkillers for afterwards though.

Jean (Monmouth) Report 26 Feb 2012 19:51

I would imagine it willbe a local anaesthetic. I have lost two toenails and maybe a possible third through the toe ulcers I have. My nails do not look as if they will grow back.

JoyBoroAngel Report 26 Feb 2012 18:50

they will only remove the nail the bed will be undamaged
and yes it will regrow
when stray was 3 she chopped 2 finger ends off in the door
right across the nail bed and had plastic surgery to repair them
they are ok yes you can tell if you look for it
but if you dont know you would think alls in order
she does have a little bother in really cold weather but thats all

Rather you than me :-( I'd offer to come down and minister to you but that would just delay your recovery :-D

Seen it done on TV with a local, but I guess your surgeon will tell you in the admissions letter (you could always phone the ward and ask).

Good luck

Ann,

a lady I worked with had both removed they didnt grow back,,,,,,,she paints hers always summmer and winter and you cant tell, it does wear off quicker than on a nail so she spends £££££££££££££££££ on varnishes,,,,and has been known to stick false ones on..... :-D :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 26 Feb 2012 17:24

If they don't remove the nail bed I would imagine it would grow back.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 26 Feb 2012 17:22

Kay????

Kay???? Report 26 Feb 2012 17:19

ouch ,lordy lordy,,,,,,,sympathy,,,,,,mind if you get it done when the weather has got much better you can wear sandles to let the air heal it,,

just a word of caution........

*steer clear of anyone with clown feet as they will step on it no matter where you stand.....* ;-) :-D

~flying doctor~ Report 26 Feb 2012 16:30

I had to have both my big toe nails off a few years ago, they also killed the nail bed to stop it regrowing, been great no pain now the nails are gone. My grandson has obviously inherited my prob and had to have his removed but they did not kill the nail bed, he still has problems and is due to go and have it removed again and the nail bed killed. It is not as bad as it sounds I wore sandalls until they had healed, went to Spain and the sun healed them fast. So when you have to go to have it removed, book a sunny holiday and make it worth it. Elaine. ;-)
