One Hospital car park I was trying to park in I'd got to the third level and had to stop, there was 5 or 6 cars in front of me, none of us could move because some a..hole had their car in the middle of the lane so we couldn't get passed or reverse or turn round to get out, so while I was in the car park I phone the out patience dept and told them I couldn't make it and had to book another appointment.

When OH had his accident l got a slip of paper from the intensive care unit which meant l only had to pay £1.30 for a whole day but after he was transfered to a ward l had to pay in full so it could cost up to £6.50 a day and seeeing l had to pay for 5 weeks it did mount up but what did annoy me was that we still had to pay on Christmas day !!

Our daughter didnt have a blue badge but she was long term sick with ongoing treatment . i think its appalling that people who have life life-threatening illnesses who are undergoing potential life saving treatment have the added stress of whether they can afford Parking fees too, It wasn't possible for our daughter to use public transport cos none existed for her from her home to the hospital

When our daughter had Hodgkin' s in 2006 we drove down to her every two weeks to take her to Canterbury Hospital for her chemo. This went on for 6 months. It was a very early start for us as she had to be there by 10.30am and we had to travel some 30miles and the take her back to the hospital. We were disgusted that Car parking had to paid for even when her treatment was running late It was added stress she didn't need.
In between chemo she had to attend the hospital for blood tests

Sometime through her treatment we were approached by a Macmillan representative who was appalled at the travel we had to do and offered help towards our travel costs. We refused cos we didn't think it was appropriate that people who made contributions to Macmillan's for their donations should be given to greedy car park firms

I am pretty sure that with our hospital parking we pay on exit. That is the machines are outside the hospital door and you put your ticket in and pay as you leave. Unless it has changed since 2 years ago when we last used it.

I wish they did go to the hospital, i have not been getting my fares refunded or parking money as i felt the hopsital needed it more than me, our hospital is a 40 mile round trip, i have to take my youngest tomorrow at 6.35, i was there yesterday and i go next wed, then i will be going in,because of the distance ive told OH not to visit as we both have phones, we always used to give our ticket too but you have to enter your registration.

The council in our area made all the streets around the hospital as permit parking. Why anyone should be able to 'own' their road outside their home for a few pounds a year is beyond belief. The downside to the logic is that there is plenty of parking around the hospital but it cannot be used even though the 'owners' might be out all day at work.

I accept someone having the use of parking say from 1800 hrs in the evening so that their cars are near their property overnight but visitors and outpatients cannot find any space to park even if they are prepared to pay.

If 50% of the on road permit parking were made available during the day it would allow the people who live there access to their homes and free up 50% for other uses.-jl

I think most car parks at Hospitals are owned by them. they contract out to parking firms who pay them a percentage of the take. However one thing to remember, Its The National Health Service,Not National Car Parks.and lots of them are as has been said Abused by people who have no need to be there.**M**.

Ah but, AnnCardiff .....
our hospital car parking is also run by a private firm and I don't think that the hospital would allow them to do that without getting something from them. The hospital chief executives are far too canny to give something for nothing.

I would take a bet on nobody gaining anything from on-site hospital car parking if the hospital did not benefit.

Hastings sounds good, Merlin.

Gloucester Royal is quite bad for parking, although they have recently built a multi storey and we have not tried to park there yet. Hospital out patient visits we go on the bus and walk, ok for us but not for people who have problems with walking. Our bus fortunately passes quite near the hospital rear entrance. When I had to be picked up after surgery OH was fortunate in finding a space quite quickly but this is unusual. Parking charges are quite high but if theyw ere not the hospital is in easy reach of both town and railway station.

If you go to Eastbourne Hospital and register your car number with them all you do is show your blue disablement badge on the way out (its scanned) its free. At the conquest in Hastings there are numerous places (Free) to use,**M**

th car parking fees at the University Hospital of Wales do not go to the hospital - they go to a private company !!!!!

I know of a 'hospital' carpark where passing a ticket with time left onto someone else was clamped down on by changing the machines to ones which you have to key in your reg number.

Are 'hospital' car parks actually owned and managed by the hospital though? Surely they're council owned and heaven forbid any red tape could but cut without costing the tax payer thousands.

Regarding the coucil car park that is empty at night, it might be down to insurance.

I completely agree with points raised by others having spent many hours - and pounds - using hospital car parks in recent years but I'm just trying to see some logic.

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 1 Feb 2012 11:34

Yes, Sharron. I see your point but it's not such a good car park for boy racers.

Anyway, I'm told that there's a security person on duty there in the evening. If that's so he could lock the barriers at about about 10 pm and the hospital ought to know that anyone parking in the hospital car park after that time must be visiting or staying with a very sick relative indeed and charges ought to be waived. (The hospital is not near a pub or shops - only the county council offices - so people would not want to use it unless they had to.)

I do understand that it will mean a loss of revenue to the hospital but just how much income does it receive from the security firm in charge of the car parking? Not a lot, I'll bet but I suppose it's keeping people in work so perhaps I shouldn't complain.

All the times we were visiting Daff or Melissa at UHW OH drove around until a disabled space became available cos I was not going to walk from the raised car park!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 1 Feb 2012 10:45

here in Cardiff, hospital car parking charges were scrapped a while ago, BUT, the largest hospital, University Hospital of Wales, is tied into a contract with a private company for years to come - and even blue badges have to pay
