Hi all

Fed up this evening when the new tree appeared BUT I clicked on Family Tree and one of the options is Use Old Tree.
So don't despair!!!

Hi All

Thank you all for your very welcome advice. I have taken the plunge and exported a Gedcom file. I now have an email from genes with the Gedcom file as an attachment. However when I try to look at it I get a message saying "Adobe Reader could not open tree because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example it was set as an email atachment and wasn't correctly coded)" Is this normal? Sorry if you are getting fed up with me asking questions but I want to make sure my tree is safe before the genes new version comes back

Very many thanks

Jude

I have already decided to stop using Genes as my main research tool and switch to using tree builder on my computer.

Shame as I have done many peoples tree's and built mine up using what has been upto now easy to use system. As some one who works in IT the new one offers little to help the limited internet user and the system is easier for them to operate and maintain.

Thanks but come June renewal time I shall be gone

Bad news. I have had a message from the genes support team and' those people who said we only had the old tree back temporarily are right . The genes support team say they have only removed the new tree temporarily and it will be back soon. I have pleaded with them to let us keep the old tree but I don't expect them to listen. I am desperately trying to export my much loved tree to Gedcom in order that I will not have to use the new tree. If anyone continues with the new tree please be careful because, if you enter a wife and the husband is already on your tree it transfers the date and place of birth and death to the wife (or vice versa). If you do not overwrite it or blank it out it will stay there for ever presumably

Has anyone had a message disappear from Facebook?

The most popular seems to be FamilyTree Maker which includes a sub for Ancestry. I have FamilyHistorian, which is more Techie, and I’m sure there are levels in it I haven’t explored.

www.which.co.uk under the Technology tab lists (you have to subscribe to read the reviews)

FamilyHistorian
Legacy- free
MacFamily Tree
Personal Ancestral File - free
Reunion
Rootsmagic.

Although they are often cheaper to download, I prefer one you load from disc. Then you can use it on more than one computer, or have it to re-load if yours goes belly-up.

Hover your curser over the button at the top of the page where it says ‘Family Tree’. The drop down box gives the option ‘import GEDCOM’. Click that. A new page opens and the instructions are all there. The Export Tree is on the left of the page. The original stays on this site - its a copy which is exported.

As I understand it, the gedcom is sent as an attachment to an email. You can then save it to where ever you wish. You won’t be able to view the tree unless you have a suitable Family Tree programme to do so. There are several free versions available to download; you’d need to do an internet search to find them.

I am a bit inexperienced with Gedcom. Can anyone help me with how I export it to some other device. Is it exported to a CD or to your hard drive or what? Do I need special software to do it. I would not like to do anything to risk losing my genes tree as I have over 13000 entries on it.

Thanks

ElizabethK - if you're still looking for Gedcom - click Family tree (oldstyle!) and you willl get the options "My tree" and "Import Gedcom". If you then click "Import Gedcom" you will also get the instructions to "export Gedcom"!

Perhaps if we bombard them with "thank yous" for letting us have our old wonderful tree back they might let us keep it. Or, perhaps they should take a vote of all members - new tree or old. Bet I know what would win by several zillion!!

Kaz.

Kaz. Report 21 Jan 2012 20:16

Just a thought...........
If they have gone back to the old tree........Why not keep it as it is? Or let us that like the old tree use it & others if they want to use the new tree......I would of thought in this day & age it would be Simples :-D

Hi all

I complained bitterly about the new tree and was just about to give up with genes and lo and behold mine has gone back to the old style tree too-wonderful!!!!! Hope it stays that way-the new style took about 10 times as long as the old to enter anything up and even then it got it wrong
