I did remark to OH that I missed the silly pantomimes that people like the newsreaders used to do. But I suppose we sort of get that when they do a 'turn' for Children in need.

I am taping Great Expectations to watch at my leisure.

I know it would appear to be 'old hat' these days, but I used to like it on Christmas morning when Noel Edmonds gave out his Christmas presents, or reunited families far flung. It made me grateful for what I had got, and made me appreciate that there were children/other people, in a far worse position than I was.

Generally I agree that it was poor but I seem to have plenty else to do so it doesn't affect me much. I liked Outnumbered, Victoria Wood, and Great Expectations ,so far. Missed the Borrowers.

It must have been one of the worst years ever. 5% at most worth watching, the rest was complete rubbish, oh and the endless repeats flogged to death day after day, after day, after day, after day, ad nauseaum.

Harry, if you think I protest too much, then it is a great pity you do not realise the difference between a protest and a comment.
I am aware of the numerous channels on offer for viewing, with their diversity, but my comment was merely an observation, of what was on offer on main stream television, and I am allowed to make a comment.

Methinks you protest too much (just to be devil's advocate). Don't know how many channels are available to us but there must be something on at any one time to please everybody.(thirty or forty channels available to most of us)

I don't think we know we are born, and have become spoiled. Remember we used to send ten minutes watching a cat with a ball of wool and stay with the little dot for quite a while at midnight.

There is a limit to the number of new programmes which can be available.

I have no trouble with the TV as I am sports mad, but there were many good programmes on the minority channels including four or five of the excellent Andre Rieu as someone mentioned.

I even saw a cowboy film where a posse caught someone - now that must be new.

I'm not all that disagreeable so I wish you all a happy and prosperous new year.

Happy days

I spent Christmas Day on my own, apart from a few telephone calls, and thoroughly enjoyed the television.

It crossed my mind that if I had been sharing the day with anyone I wouldn't have got my choice. I watched Darcy Bussell doing some alternative dancing. I then watched Prince Charles talking about Sir Hubert Parry. Then Coronation Street and Downton Abbey.

I don't watch much television and I am disappointed that I have missed Mrs Browns Boys. I've also enjoyed University Challenge watching some of the excellent/rubbish alumni .

Think the biggest problem at Christmas is trying to suit all tastes - not an easy job at the best of times. Don't remember anyone complaining when we only had one channel.....in black and white- lol- jl

With a few exceptions it wasn't good. We did watch one Morecambe and Wise, they are old but still funny, Downton was good as was strictly and also Victoria Wood. But we recorded the second part of her show, why put the best shows on so late?

I have said before, Iw atch the soaps and there was some good acting but they were all so sad and depressing for Christmas, why can't they be like they used to be. I remember when Coronation street put on a pantomime, really funny. We want to laugh not cry at christmas. Real life is sad enough.

Lawrence of Arabia!!! lovely film, lovely music but FGS - done to death - I know every word

reruns of Morecombe and Wise - great comedians but they've been done to death too!!!

Don't know about over Christmas period, but television at every other time of the year is blinking boring.
All it is, is either bloody soaps that have moronic story lines and useless actors, cooking programs, or a lot of has beens dancing around. :-| :-| :-| :-| :-Thank goodness there's programs like discovery and the like.

George :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Have taped quite a few films - there are better ones (that appeal to me anyway during the day). I just have to remember to check the tv guide late at night or early next morning!

I miss the days when we had the Childrens Hospital in the morning with all the presents, circus in the afternoon and a pantomine in the evening.

Haven't watched Downton yet - that is for peace and quiet time. I have taped the Borrowers. Looking forward to the Three Men tonight which clashes with young Mr Fox in a dram at 9.00 p.m,.

I watched a new version of the Borrowers yesterday evening and enjoyed it very much, also the reruns of Dads Army, Father Ted, and the carry on films!

highlight of yesterday for me was Mrs Browns Boys,

and the docu on Victoria Wood......

strange innit? out of 100 plus channels on freeview, theres often nothing of interest at times, and how I detest this 10 minutes of program, and 8 minutes of adverts!!

I agree, Julia, nothing much grabbed me either, apart from Downton as you say. Last night we watched The Kings Speech on DVD, a present from one of our sons. There seem to be so many repeats on all the channels.

KathleenBell Report 27 Dec 2011 10:26

I have to agree Julia - we also ended up watching the Eddie Stobbart programme (which is something we probably wouldn't have bothered with if there had been anything else worth watching on). We did quite enjoy it though.

Christmas Day I ended up watching a Cliff Richard DVD I had been given.

I recorded Downton as I am catching up with the second series on video at the moment.

I wasn't particularly impressed by the television over Christmas. Naturally, Downton was the highlight, but nothig much else was interesting. Christmas Eve, was particularly poor, and we ended up watching a programme about Eddy Stobbart lorries getting through Christmas deliveries.
What do you think.
