I have just moved into a new v small flat with storage heaters. I have never had these before but what is very evident is that the more modern buildings are much better insulated than the previous houses I have lived in.

I'm sitting here in my PJ's without my DG when I really should turn the heating down. Its sort of on medium. If I did that doubt I would need any heating on at all.

You're lucky in many ways ,over here in Canada the heating is on all day and night once winter really hits !! We're set at 22 right now but it will go higher to maybe 25. That said we wear warm clothes and use a blanket over the legs whilst watching TV. The cat warms the bed up nicely when he sleeps by your feet =0) If the kids moan it's too cold they can go outside for a few minutes then when they come back in it feels warm to them .

Mine is set on 17.....Its really old fashioned air heating from vents in the floor, it is so noisy!!

The temperature depends on many things - how much do you feel the cold, are there nasty draughts around, have you a huge house or a cosy 1 bed one.

Does anyone know how I can change this: My thermostat has to be on about 28 or the heating wont come on. After a while its then too hot so I turn iot down, hence it goes off completely. Surely I should be able to set it lower and it would still come on?

There's probably something on the boiler controls itself. OH deals with those things, and it probably is different for each model/manufacturer.

Have you still got the users hand book, or can you look the model up on the internet? You might be able to phone the manufacturer and ask their advice.

Failing that, find a friendly CH engineer amongst your acquaintances who will have look for the cost of a pint, or book someone to come and service it in the NY.

Thanks Detective, at least I know now. Not got the manual but I can look online. Many thanks for replying. xx

Romany Star, it depends where your thermostat is situated. If it is in a room where there is secondary heating, the thermostat will think it is warm enough so it wont switch the heating on.

If the area goes below 28 then it will switch on. If for example it is near a warm kitchen when you are cooking then if you lower the thermostat it won't switch the heating on even though it could be freezing upstairs. Perhaps individual thermostats might be the answer. As Detective advised a heating engineer will sort out. -hope you can keep warm- jl

Thanks Janet. The thermostat is in my middle room, which is the warmest in the house as Im mid terrace. Its inbetween the small living room and small kitchen so what you say makes a lot of sense! The middle of the house does seem warm. Thankyou and all the best for 2012. x

Romanystar, try turning down the radiator in the room with the thermostat so it doesn't get quite as warm, therefore might trigger the thermostat sooner.
Does that sound right?

Ours is set at 18 and comes on morning and evening. Sometimes we turn it back on during the day, and sometimes we turn it up, but never more than 20 deg. We have no other form of heating, and plenty of insulation. Our radiators are not thermostatically controlled, but we have them open at different levels. Our bedroom is completely off, and the back bedroom is only on very low. All the rest are turned on fully in the Winter.
If we go out for the day, we turn it down to 15, then it will only come on if the temp drops low.
