Perhaps Sue,but I always make shortcake with butter, selfraising flour and caster sugar.....binding ingredients together.....there are many variations of course :-)

I wonder if it's supposed to be a shortCAKE recipe rather than shortbread.

I agree, I make shortbread very successfully in the aga but have made it in the oven too. I never melt anything just rub in and knead the flour, butter and caster sugar together before spreading it all over the base of a tin. It's a mighty strange recipe!

took it from a recipe book(thought it sounded strange, wait a min will go and get it......right here we go.6oz butter and 4 tablespoons milk, melt butter in the milk but do not over heat, that means warming it in a pan over a heat on the cooker?mix it into the flour andknead lightly, thats what i did. :-D

That seems like a mighty odd recipe for shortbread. I have never melted anything together.

Don't think it was you at all.Try another recipe.

hi sharon.
thanks for saying that, but it was prob me,
the recipe called for 6oz butter and 4 tablespoons of milt melted together over a warm heat and then added to the flour and caster suger,i admit it looked a little to moist when i rolled it out.x :-(

Probably the recipe was rubbish.

Some cookery books do seem to contain recipes that are utter manure and I think many have misprints in them.

I always put a bit of semolina in shortbread.
