According to the Australian Press they are an Australian bloke and his Canadian girlfriend on holiday. They have received quite a lot of press coverage over here. His story is the girl was knocked over by the police, she became hysterical, and he was trying to comfort her.

To be fair Sherlock, it's not just football, and it certainly had nothing to do with football in Canada. But it seems to be creeping into all sports to a degree...take a look at this.

You are correct about the apology after the fact. Hope whatever of them get caught are banned and fined.

Thank goodness we seldom see any such behaviour over here. However with the increasing acceptance of soccer in this country it is always a possibility.

RockyMountainShy Report 19 Jun 2011 04:26

Well, of course it settled down now. They had their 'fun', so now they can get on with their lives until the police comes knocking.

One of the rioters has made a public apology. But like the reporter said would you be apologizing if you had not been caught on film and arrested, he didn't really answer the question.

AuntySherlock Report 19 Jun 2011 04:10

I noticed you lot have missed the Aussie angle to these riots.

What a photo and what an amazing young couple to decline the media interest and offers and go back to being just holiday makers.

And with regard to riots, as mentioned if my team doesn't pull up its collective socks very soon there will be riots over here as well.

Hi Deb, thanks for replying :-D

In the UK we can only rely on media reports like this one from BBC news, however it is nice to get another perspective.

Riot police in Vancouver used tear gas to quell violence that broke out after the Vancouver Canucks lost the final game of the Stanley Cup.

Cars were set on fire and shops were looted following the ice hockey team's 4-0 defeat to the Boston Bruins.

Mobs of angry fans roamed central Vancouver after the game, as thick acrid smoke rose over the city centre.

Similar riots broke out in the Canadian city after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup in 1994.

Record crowds of supporters gathered in the heart of the city on Wednesday in the hope of seeing their team - the favourites - secure the Stanley Cup and be crowned winners of the National Hockey League (NHL).

But hope quickly turned to gloom after the Boston Bruins scored first and then went on to secure an emphatic victory.
Firecrackers

As soon as the final buzzer sounded, a hail of beer bottles rained down on the giant outdoor television screens, the Associated Press reports.

“It's so sad to see this happen again. This is a real black eye on our city”
Witness Larissa VanDam

People chanted obscenities, and witnesses said some people took out their anger on nearby cars, flipping two over and setting them alight.

Shops were also reported to have had their windows smashed and then looted.

Some fans were seen trying to hold back more unruly members of the crowd, without much success.

A line of 10 riot police tried to hold back a crowd of several thousand in one part of central Vancouver, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

Police spokesperson Jana McGuinness said there were unconfirmed reports of at least four stabbings, as well as other injuries.

Officers were pelted with bottles and firecrackers; streets were filled with rubbish, broken glass and streams of alcohol.

After numerous arrests and a series of confrontations, police cleared the streets of downtown Vancouver about four hours after the riots broke out.

"It's so sad to see this happen again," Larissa VanDam told the Globe and Mail. "This is a real black eye on our city. We saw this happen in 1994 and I was so, so hoping it wouldn't happen again."

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson described the scenes as "embarrassing and shameful".

"The vast majority of people who were downtown were there to enjoy the game in a peaceful and respectful manner," he said.

"It is unfortunate that a small number of people intent on criminal activity have turned pockets of the downtown into areas involving destruction of property and confrontations with police."

The Canucks had the NHL's best regular-season record, but have never won the Stanley Cup since entering the league 40 years ago.

Sadly riots of this nature have little to do with the sport they are supposed to be rioting about. It is just anarchy timed to coincide with an event. We see it here with football, and more, we have seen it here with peaceful demonstrations in London, in which, during one anrachistic group disrupted a peaceful demo, a man lost his life.

It's yin and yang isn't it. Where there is one peaceful organisation, there will always be the opposite bunch of anarchists. Totally unacceptable but true.

Hi Debs.nice to see you....

Have you seen our lot after football matches not only here (uk )but the embarresment they've caused in other countires for us,it doesnt need a lost match either to cause these people to freak out and become violent. :-)

Hi Deb,

Sadly when society has a few idiots in it that behave like barabaric neanderthals, it makes for good 'rubbish' for the media. Doesn't matter where or why - it happens over and over.

NZ is to host the Worl Rugby Cup this year. We will be on the world stage. You can bet your bottom dollar there will be idiots in waiting, dying to upset the apple cart. It is not a reflection of the nature of the majority of Kiwi's . I understand your frustrations......

I have never visited Vancouver but would love too. This incident wouldn't put me off.

Susan

PS: if our Team don't win this upcoming competition, I am ducking for cover... We are poor losers where Rugby is concerned. :-D

Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 18 Jun 2011 06:11

This is what I posted to my friends on facebook:

"I would like to explain to my international friends what went on in Vancouver last night. Our hockey team the Vancouver Canucks lost the game for the cup to the Boston Bruins. Of course we were sad. Just before the game ended a riot started in downtown Vancouver.
I would like to stress that it was NOT fans that started this. From police reports they are a well known group, who came just to cause trouble. They are the same group that caused problems at the Olympics . They went into the downtown area with gasoline and the such, prepared for a riot. We are now shown internationaly as a city that no one would dare to visit.
We are a very gentle society. We are NOT trouble makers or low lifes. I am so upset of what these yobs have done to our city. Vancouver fans are not to blame. I am ashamed to be associated with these people just because I live here."
