Carole,
When you rescued him,you gave him the love he thought he would never get.
If it hadn't been for you, he wouldn't have enjoyed such a lovely,loving life.
You loved him to the end-having him put to sleep before the pain overtook him was the most loving, unselfish thing you could do.
Remember the saying 'If you really love them, you will let them go'.
RIP Coco.

Aww bless you Carole, he asleep now and without pain!!
l had to compose myself before l responed tothis thread, it reminded me of when our Lady was put to sleep in 2004, and how l dread the day our beloved Madoc should need the same treatment. Ark at me he's fine now and full of energy, although slowing a wee bit, but he's just over 10yrs now and covered inlumps and bumps, one of which was cancerous, he's got an appointment this week for check up!!
When Lady went it was about 6 weeks and then we had Madoc:o)) xx

I am so very sorry for your loss. Yes, he is no longer suffering, but you are suffering the bereavement of a close member of your family. God bless.

Carole, I am sorry to read this - you will miss Coco so much but can rest in the knowledge you gave him a loving home and did the best you could for him for a long time and then you saved him from suffering.

It was in 1998 close to the end of May Bank Holiday that we lost our dog. We found a lump on our lovely old Daisy (a labrador cross we had from just a few weeks old and 'met' at my friend's house when she was just one day old,) a yellow lab colour from a black mongrel and a Golden Lab from their neighbours. Daisy had the most amazing temperament and put up with all the children locally playing with her, my son was just 4 when we brought her home to our house at the start of the school summer hols. She was 12 when she had an op to try and remove the tumour but altho she rallied for a couple of days she went downhill fast and I took her back to the vet where she was put on a drip while they tried to help her. Later that day the vet rang and told me it was time to let Daisy go, and there wasn't even time for me to go and say goodbye. We picked her up and she was curled up as if asleep, we buried her in her blanket in the garden, bless her.
I would never find such a wonderfully patient loving dog as Daisy but was glad to have her in our lives. The pain of loss is the price to pay for the fun and devotion she gave us.

Just picture Coco painfree and happy playing with all our dogs on here that have gone ahead. Treat yourselves kindly as you adjust to your loss.

Coco was very good with children, some were frightened as he was a big dog, but we encouraged the kids to give him a dog treat. He always took them gently. The kids soon lost their fears.
I was dropped off after work today and my first instinct was to call home and say do you want to bring Coco to meet me as usual. Then it hit me. I walked into the house no little brown face with a toy in it's mouth to greet me. His bed no longer in the utility room, where he loved to take himself off to bed at night. What an empty feeling this house has

I have shed tears for you, I know how you are feeling. However, the person who says she remebers and still talks about her dog of 40 years ago is right, you never forget them and as the sadness fades you'll remember the happy times. Think also about rescuing another, there are so many. Some older dog whose owner has gone before him, just imagine how the poor dog feels after having a loving home. God bless you. Elaine.

Hi Elaine, my son and I still talk about Daisy and even my o.h. became fond of her, he had never had a pet before, even as a child but loved to take her for walks, altho he usually ended up at the pub with her.

I had to go to work. They had been good and aranged for me to have Tuesday off to be with Steve so we could both go with Coco to the vets. They also let me work where I would be away from people on Wednesday.

In my heart I know it was the right thing to do but it was so hard.

My parents had a tiny dog which died when I was 11. It was awful. But this time it's worse. Coco was a big dog, with a lovely temperment. He loved to swim. Enjoyed his walks, and was a very special baby. :-)
