hidden family members

why do people have hidden family members on there trees what does that mean?

It means they are, or maybe, still alive, and it is against site rules to put Living people on their trees unless permission has been given by that person.

Also... anyone who ticks the *hide living people* box, will have anyone with a birth date of 150 years (I think) or less hidden, unless you have put a date of death. I tend to make up a date of death (on two of my gt gt grandparents, for example, who were born in 1870)... and then put a note in the *comments* bit of that person's entry that this is not verified, just put in to enable Hot Matches to be made...

But see a current thread on Tips, which took some of us including me by surprise, warning us that it doesn't stop the names of the living coming up on Hot Matches or searches
