I used to live at the address that I am researching and sadly it has been demolished.....

Here is one of "Jonsesey's great tips on how to seach by address on Ancestry.
I have used this quite often, vey interesting to do it

So is the 1881 UK census the only one on Ancestry that is searchable by address?

Well no it isn't, they all are if you have determination and patience. Here is how you can do it:

1) On Ancestry click on the census year then on the one (England, Wales ect) that you are interested in.

2) Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see 'Please choose a county'. Click on the appropriate county.

3) On the next page find the civil parish that you are interested in and click on that.

4) On the next page you will see a list of districts (The larger the place the more districts there will be).

5) By the side of each district you will see, 'View description of enumeration district'

6) As you click on each of those in turn you will be presented with a sheet from the enumerators book containing details of the roads, streets, buildings which are covered in that district.

7) Once you have discovered which district covers the place that you are interested in go back and click on that district number.

8) Check each sheet until you discover the place/address you are looking for.

Many earlier returns only have folio numbers rather than house numbers but with a bit of effort using such places as public houses as a guide it is often possible to identify what the house number may have been.

It can be a long winded process but it can be rewarding.

N.B. All Scottish census records on Ancestry are directly searchable by address but unfortunately original images are not available on the site. A direct address search for most censuses is available at Find My Past.

please would someone explain to me how to do an address search on a census. I want to find out who lived in 4 Murdoch Cottages, Grove Road , London E3. on any census.
I am trying to find the history of all the houses I have lived in as am taking a break from finding family members for a week or two.
