I have been contacted by someone who has allowed me to view their tree and wants me to let them have access to viewing my tree, but on looking at their tree. The relative of mine is not connected to them they have added an in-laws relatives on. I'm not sure what to do next. Tell them or ignore them.

I always reply thanking them for giving me access to their tree but unfortunately there is no connection.

I also ask them to stop giving me access to their tree and wish them luck with their research.

I have had this too and have gone back to them saying "thanks for opening your tree , I have looked at it but there isnt any family connections Im afraid. Good luck in your research ,"

I do that as well.

Someone on Ancestory, has my 6 x great grandfather on her tree, and when I wrote, would appear that this family comes from a different part of the country to mine. I pointed this out, but I see they have kept my ancestors on their tree, it is so easy to remove, so dont know why they have not taken it off.

The problem is it is my relative but it's not her relative it the ancestor of great aunt's husband. I'm not sure if she realises that these people are not related to her.

I still wouldn't open my tree. I would point out that although the person in question is a relative of mine that I think she has made a mistake and explain my reasons

There isn't a problem nor has she made a mistake. She has a connection via a marriage and through the in-laws - absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. I have several of these in my tree as I tend to go up and down at least one generation for each connection I make. This can often lead to someone else having a connection, even though they are not related to me.

The issue surely is whether or not to share your entire tree with this sort of distant connection. Personally I don't, usually, but am quite happy to exchange info on a need to know basis

I do the same thing on my tree on my home pc I often add in the parents details or any relative that may be of interest but my home pc software shows me that these are not relatives. Also her tree has taken this back several generations that I think she has made a mistake.

I have quite a lot of people that have given me access - but I don't return the favour - they have usually got a small amount of people and I have quite a lot so like the Inspector - I will give them any information at all that would help them with their tree and leave it at that. It seems to work - no one has complained back to me.

If I think they have made an error - I will give them the details and explain where the information etc came from - it's not a game of willy nilly - it is supposed to be as accurate as we can for all of those that follow us.

I only keep a very small basic tree on here, but have most of it on Ancestry.If someone contacts me & they are clearly tracing the wrong family, which happens quite often, I tell them what I have & back it up with info from certs, PRs etc.
I rarely here from them again.
