Please can anyone living in Sheffield tell me whether the above streets are still residental with houses 100-150 years old? My grandparents lived there and my gtgrandfather built some of them. Thank you

Go to maps.google.co.uk.

Type in the road names (one at a time) and they have the street view option. You have to drag the little yellow man from the top left corner to where you want to have a look.

I'm not going to spoil your 'fun' - go and have a look!!! :-)

Thank you one and all for usefull answers. I have just tried the google advice (haven't used it for years and it is now so different), was just getting used to it ,and was next door to where my gran used to live when it crashed!!! So, thought it better to reply than try again. I managed to negotiate from Shirland Lane (where I lived when tiny)up Swarcliffe Road aiming for Staniforth Rd, no. 305 where my aunt had a hairdressing shop and when we were bombed out in Hull during the war, we lived behind the shop until 1945.
May take you up on your offer Nina, when I have the right papers with me - need to make sure I have the right surnames.

Finally made it all the way up Swarcliffe Rd on google and couldn't believe how small the houses seem to be. Two up and two down as I remember with a coal cellar and whitewashed cellar head which was cool and used as a pantry I think. Across the road where the chapel was is now a bungalow, perhaps a conversion.
My gran and 2 of her sisters occupied nos. 58,64 and 68 with their families until at least the 1950's and their names were Lucy Tate,Rose Ellen Allison and Clara Jackson if anyone remembers them.
My gtgrandfather, James Hopkinson was reputed to have built those above and maybe more. I would be grateful if someone could point me to a site where I could find the facts about this and possibly a date when they were built........................Mavis in Ceredigion

Annina may the best person to give advice as she is on the doorstep, so to speak.

It might be worth asking either the Sheffield Library, or someone in person, to check for any old maps which if compared sequentially, can be helpful to date their first appearance.

You could also try doing an address search on the 1911 census, which would indicate if they were built then, and earlier census as well, if they were. There may be a difficulty if there has been a name change at some point.

Hi Mavis,Nina again,I fear that the area you knew is vastly different now.

Whether(weather?) any of you rellies still live there I wouldn't know, but it is now largely occupied by shall we say, the ethnic community. I am not vastly knowlegable with the modern area, only driving through to visit the Vet,but if you like,I could buy a cheap disposable camera, and photograph any houses that you are interested in. I do have a digital gismo, but havn't a clue how to access any photo's in it.

The phone no's of Sheffield central library is 0114 2734727

Burngreave library,0114 2039002

Darnall Library,0114 2037429.

Also,if you google Sheffield Archives, there are a number of local societies that would be helpful.

Owt else,just yell,Nina in Sheffield.

Thank you DET, Joan and Nina. It always surprises me when people reply and are so interested in the questions we ask, and do their very best to resolve them, as you have done.
I have cousins in Sheffield who are not in the least interested in our family tree but I might now give them a nudge in the direction of the library to see if that will awaken their interest, not that I mind doing the research, but it won't do them any harm to have a go now that I can point them in the right direction.
Thank you Nina for the photo offer, but with white plastic window frames it somehow spoils the picture.
Will give you an update later....................Mavis
