Course they're called willicks, we collected them from the beach when children,Mam boiled them and we ate them with a pin.......couldn't eat them now though ;O( xx

edit....I grew up in Tynemouth/North Shields yup always called them willicks

Just on a slight tangent. We eat cockles, mussels, winkles & limpets.

Why not the common edible snail? We rib the French for eating them, yet they are all types of molluscs

BTW I wouldn't eat one. lol

I used to think as a young un that winkles was a posh term for willicks a small whelk (SP)

As kids we used to pick them off the rocks at low tide. Then Mother would boil them. then we'd get a bag and a pin to week them out.Was a treat.

Now it pays to remember what willicks feed on

ya can get winkles at redcar now, duno how safe thy r to eat but they didnt kill mum when she tryed them the other week lol


we used to go to robin hoods bay and sumwere else but i cnt emeber lol x

I nearly fainted when I read the thread title. I thought no it couldnt be, Stray is far to young to worry about wrinkles. So I had loads of advice ready just in case, like get your son to airbrush every single photo he takes of you on holidays, then there is Polyfilla, oh the list is endless!! But I re read it and it is just about those horrible little wormy things....ugh....pmsl....must go to Specsavers....XXX BC

What about limpets........We boiled them as well, but they were harder to knock off the rocks, and as soon as they heard you coming, I swear to god they stuck even more to the rocks ..!!

I don't think I could ever eat them now, but we had buckets full as kids !!

You mean Littorina littorea of the Littorinidae family of sea life

we used to get them from sea burn on a sunday boil them up and eat em with a pin and we called em willicks xx

No, I'm not from 'oop North' myself but have lots of Northern links. I'm in the South of the UK although originally born in Tanzania.

Love the Northern expression 'mardy' when someone's in a bad mood and OH is Welsh so 'come and have a cwtch with Nana' (come and have a cuddle with Nana) is commonly used in our household.

im not keen on em now but loved them when little, but id never heard them walled willicks before, lol,

littleman wont eat them i think the look of them puts him off lol x

They are called Common Edible Periwinkle I used to eat them as a child as the beach was in walking distance .

Mum used to boil them, and then sprinkle them with vinegar and used to get a hair grip to pull em out ..!!

I dont know about winkles. But I love cockles, had some this weekend when we went to Burnham on Crouch.

Yup - heard them called that. Not that you'd ever catch me eating one - yeeeuuughhh!!!!

There also used to be an expression - "stop picking your willick" when Mum used to catch you with your finger up your nose!!!

well someone on me fb, said there called willicks? anyone else ever known them been called this???
