Please don't use a long lead on your pup, Lizz... I think the animal charities suggest that is a form of cruelty..... as is the wearing of a muzzle at any time other than when he is considered dangerous and out in the public... they can't pant properly nor can they drink properly when they are muzzled. They need to pant to regulate their temperature.

The best suggestion is Mrs Grumpy's.... a bell on his collar.

As Maggie is likely thinking.... are they fledglings? Or are they blackbirds? Part of the *training* for young blackbirds is for them to be left on the ground, while mum and dad observe... they are ground foragers.... they eat worms and such like, and root around in the leaves and stuff for the tasty morsals they find under them... and they have to learn to forage and lookout at the same time. So they would be especially vulnerable. An audible warning such as a bell, would give the birds a chance to hear and escape.

Or go out with him, and make as much noise as you can to make sure you frighten off any birds before giving your puppy the freedom of the garden. And stay out making a noise as well.....

Love

what sort of dog breed is he Lizz? If he is a small Terrier type dog, theres not alot you can do other than what has previously been said. They have it in their nature to chase things that move.

P.S he's doing better than a cat! lol

Could you put a bell on his collar? We had to do that once with one of our cats - at least the birds would hear him coming ...

if you have a longish garden.....how about a running lead......a long line with a lead on it that will allow the dog to roam the garden but keep it in check?
or a muzzle?
