I was just about to ask about how GR had got early access to the 1911 census data
and to ask them to JUSTIFY why you have to pay extra to get to it

But this thread answers a lots of that

Still feel GR should be more open about the how and why

fair enough ........ I'm thankful that I don't ever see those ads!

I have heard about them, on several occasions over the last 7 years

and I do think at times that there could be good cause for wrongful advertising!

However, there is a feeling with ancestry that you are really getting something for your money!

I didn't even think twice about upgrading to Premium on there when all the new records started coming on line. Not the London bmds 'cos they are not very useful for me ......... I use them to help other people!

Here on GR, all that happens is that you get re-directed to other sites!

The bmds are the worst .......... you are sent to the INDEX of b, m, and d's, which you then have to search.

I guess they couldn't charge for access to the free site, www.freebmd.org.uk, and were unwilling to support that site pay for access to it (as ancestry is a supporter, and thus has the 1837-1915 records)

Several people in the last couple of days have been saying that while there seems to be something different about the intial search on here for the 1911, it only gives you a small amount of the information that is available on the other two sites ....... including the fact that you cannot see the census image!

I guess I'm just tired of seeing thread after thread complaining about Platinum.

A year or so ago, it was thread after thread of people complaining about Gold.

am I just plain getting tired of this site???

Maybe!

certainly I am tired of it when there's all this kind of complaining

To be fair Sylvia...I think that the GR adverts on UK TV a while back misled many members to join...thinking all the research they needed would be found on this site.

The same when Ancestry included the London bmds...I had to upgrade to premier membership...I was none to pleased seeing as I had been paying subs for the past 6 years. It was well worth it though : ))).

You're being asked to pay for it becasue every other site is charging extra for it

Why?

Because FindMyPast paid big bucks to the UK Government for the rights to transcribe and digitise the 1911 Census, and then release most of it 2 years early

There is a little more infromation that will not be released until early 2012 (the 100 year rule)

Of course FMP wants to get its money back

GR is now owned by the same group that owns FMP ...... and that is the ONLY reason that GR has got access to it now

If you do Advanced Search for 1911 Censusyou will see that there have been about 4 threads on this in the last few days ......... and if you read them, you will see what suckers you have all been for paying for Gold Membership

so quit yer griping!

Am I the only one here who finds that the release of the 1911 census and being charged for it is unfair and unjust. How many Gold members out there paid for the Gold membership giving "FULL" access now find they are being asked to pay for access to the 1911 Cenus. Am I the only one who finds this unfair. I have paid for a Service and expect a Service not for extra bits to be added and they be told I have to pay extra for it.
