It's awful. Nothing can really be said. May the families of the killed and injured find solace.

No, I am sorry.......Terrible as this episode is
it isnt another GOOD reason to ban the sale of guns.......its the idiots that get hold of them that is the problem!!

you wouldn't advocate the ban of the sale of cars if this madman had gone on a hit and run spree would you?, or golf clubs?
if as Prince Philip said after one of the school incidents.........." You can do much the same damage with a golf club"
in china there have been several incidents of madmen getting into schools and stabbing teachers and children........be real,
its the mental-ill health that is the problem!!

Trouble is, Bob, an incredible amount of people think that you can just walk into a shop and buy a firearm. And an even greater number think that bans work.

However, it does appear that this lunatic possessed a licence, so I await the outcome of the investigation into how he did, were there warning signs and I hope that there will be no fudging as in the Cullen report.

Having said that, you can't legislate against insanity.

Eldrick Report 3 Jun 2010 08:34

Just a minor correction - the argument of the US 'gun lobby' (the NRA) is not that disarmament will lead to a communist state, but an insistence to the adherence of the 2nd amendment of the American Constitution, which reads:

'A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.'

You cannot legislate against insanity.

I dont think he was lunatic or outwardly showed any signs of with the procedure to get a firearm licence Eldrick,,,,,,, but wouldnt be suprised that some personal famliy relationship came to light and caused him to flip, but perhaps no one will ever get to know why

I just hope all the details are made public, unlike Dunblane. There are rumours abounding about wills and stuff, but I discount them for now.

I think we can all agree that he was totally insane when he did this, by any definition of the word. However, what is relevant is whether there were signs beforehand, either at the time his certificates were granted or renewed, or in the interim period. If there is cause for concern, a certificate may be revoked and I suspect that is the area that will be scrutinised.

Kay???? Report 3 Jun 2010 11:05

I agree Eldrick he certainly wasnt in full control during his spree and his actions were of an insane person. pure blind hate rage makes a person act insane yet after can appear very normal,

arent there doctors reports and stuff before a full firearms cert be granted?? I know you will know this....}}}},,,he had held one for 20 years,

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 3 Jun 2010 11:13

Yes, every 5 years, on renewal, you have to give references and the name of your doctor along with consent to access medical records. This option isn't always followed up, usually only if there are some concerns about the fitness of the applicant.

For a shotgun, you don't need to provide a good cause for possession but for a firearms, i.e. a rifle, (a S1. firearms, to use the proper term) you need to state where you will use it and for what purpose. You can only have specific firearms, the ones that are listed on your certificate. You can't just go and buy anything. There is no limit to the number of shotguns allowed once a certificate is granted for them.

There are numerous restrictions on both regarding carrying in a public place, secure storage, purchase of ammunition, etc.

EDIT.................OOOOps Eldrick, you beat me to it!

Kay, a certificate renewal is much like an MOT..

is only valid at the time of the inspection!
However,
to get a renewal granted, the applicant has to fill in the paperwork,
have two referees, give access to his doctor, and or medical records..AND his method of storage is inspected AND a face to face interview with a firearms officer.
Circumstances may change drastically at short notice, but normally any untoward aspect of the applicant comes to light during this renewal process, and the renewal is not granted.

AnninGlos Report 3 Jun 2010 22:30

My thoughts are with the families of those killed and injured and with the two sons of the killer, they must be devastated, I believe from new reports that one of the sons was close to his father, used to go fishing with him etc.

So sad to start with killing his twin brother too. You never know what to believe in these affairs but apparently he did have a licence and had inherited an arsenal of weapons from his father who was a collector. I am just relieved he didn't get to Ambleside where he was apparently heading when he crashed the car, our two Grandsons are on holiday in the Lake District and were in that area when the shootings were taking place.
