Can someone give me a second opinion please? The reference below gives a page on the census containing Lewis Griffiths senior and Lewis Griffiths junior. Senior's occupation, I think, says 'Ironballer', the young lad's says, I think, 'Ironpiler'.

Does anyone else agree and can anyone tell me what these occupations actually are? Ive tried googling and come up with nothing!

Thanks very much

Jules

Sorry Shirley - its Wales 1851, in the Monmouthshire Area. My original search was for lewis griffiths born 1843 +/- 2 years.

Ok found it 1851 ,yes agree with you on both of them
had a look on old occupations site but although theres several jobs to do with Iron making these two arent listed, Would say though its to do with the iron making process

Thanks for that Shirley, I thought that too, seems logical doesnt it?

Im wondering if I have the right lewis then - his occupation on his marriage cert was coalminer.

This Lewis would have been just 10 years old on the 1715 census - thats awfully young for working in an ironworks.

Trying to make out the address they lived at - think it says Garndyris? What do you think?

Im guessing its not too far from Blaenavon as Llanwenwearth is between there and Abergavenny.

yes its Garndyris looks like Queen Garndyris

did you notce further down the page is the Puddlers Arms occ of the head was Iron Pudler so they all seem to be in the Iron process work

Have had a look at the maps - there is Garnddyrys - which could be the same thing. Its actually in the north of Blaenavon - certainly within walking distance of the ironworks on the main road through Blaenavon towards Abergavenny.

Yes I did see the inns - the Pudlers Arms sounds as though it was made for those working at the ironworks! I cant find it today but the Victoria Inn is still there, although not that close to the area now marked as Garnddyrys.

Its like a detective story. I love it! I wonder if I have the right Lewis though. So difficult to work this one out!

Age doesnt matter, children were working in those days. My father started work at the age of 11 in 1911.
