Mel Fairy Godmother Report 23 Dec 2025 11:04

Morning girls,

Dull and cloudy this moring and its 8 degrees. Overslept after yesterdays day out.

Going back to the salt and issue of the damp windows. I bought two moisture pads from Temu and have one in the car and one in the bedroom. when the spot on them turns pink you pop them in the microwave for a minuet or two. well worth their money but look through all of them as some are cheaper than others. I paid £5 something for two. You have to spend £15 for free delivery but there are lots of things on Temu for the house and garden and clothes and goodness knows what.

I have bought their fleecy tops as they are so warm and cheap if they only last the winter I'm happy at £6 or £7 a go in the clearance.

...Just quickly, in case Annx looks in before shopping....

ALDI had small size car dehumidifier 'pads' this week, as one of their centre aisle items....may be rechargeable?
Elder daughter made herself some dehumidifiers for the car and elsewhere by putting cat litter in an old thick sock and sewing it closed.
Would salt hold the water enough?

Hopefully bbl.

Good morning all. We have to go into Workington around 0930 so I dare not go back to sleep. It is pick up the Turkey time. Hoping as we are in the early slot it won’t be too crowded.

Ann hope you can get your curtains sorted. I assume they are ready made??

Yes I washed my hair over the bath at home before we came away and I have managed it in the shower here while keeping my left foot forward of the main jet of water so it barely got wet.

Annx Report 22 Dec 2025 19:54

Evening All,

My word it was chilly this morning! I am fed up with condensation on my car windscreen and also the bright sun making it hard to see through when it's dry, so I gave it a good wipe with the special cloth I have, but could hardly reach across and I'm trying a tip I read about by putting a small container of salt in the car to absorb moisture. If it works I'll try it on the bedroom window sills.

Vera I admire and wish I had your energy to attend and host these dos with so much else to do this time of the year. I mentioned it to OH and he said we must be wimps! :-) I think he's right! I keep forgetting to ask you whether the horse is rideable yet? I'm hoping to see a pic of you astride it one day. ;-) I got my mum to get on my pony once (and only once ) when I was a teenager. She thought I was just going to walk her round their big garden, but I took her through the gate and up to the village a quarter of a mile away and into the village square surrounded by cottages. She had a skirt on, not trousers, so was laughing and trying to keep it over her knees and not see anyone she knew. She talked about it for years afterwards. Will you be taking a little present for your daughter's new dogs?

I wonder what decoration you will make icing your cake Mandy? Mine were rough snow scenes at first for many years, but I made a slope with a toboggan going down it one year and the thick icing for the slope was impossible to bite. My best effort was making a poinsetta flower on the top by colouring marzipan.

Mel it sounds like you had a nice time in the shops looking round and bought quite a few things. We were going to go to Aldi early this morning but gave it a miss after OH had a bad night with the head pain he gets sometimes. We might do it tomorrow though.

AnnG I hope the wound settles down soon and gives you less trouble. It's good there's no infection though and it doesn't stop you doing anything. It's lovely riding through lovely scenery isn't it and the sunshine makes it all the better I hope you managed to wash your hair ok.

Well I've finally decided on some curtains with thermal linings I like for in here online, so am going to order them when I've double checked the measurements.

Lost the lot again.

Hi girls,

Been out all day as I went to Morrisons early as I wanted to get back before dark and go to Lidl too. Had a lovely look around and back and forth in the shop cos I son't know where everyhing is now. I have no shopping this week cos I did'nt book a slot but I like to go and have a look around before Chirstmas and I got a couple more bits for little Winnie next door and Em's boys. Bought some small joints of lamb and pork loin as I can cook those when Stu comes and I like to see the meat I am buying in the way of pork and lamb. I shan'nt need any shopping next week either. Christmas has come on funny days this year right in the middle of the week. I bought some brown parcel paper in LIdl and when I got to the till the girl on there said it was buy one get one free so I chose a Christmas one with cones and greenery on.

Bit tired now as I have not donr that big shop or walked around so much for ages. Got chicken bacon and leek pasty for dinner tonight might do a few chips might not.

Not really any change in my leg Vera, it is just a wound about 1.5 cams in diameter, scabbed over but will take a long time to heal, it is uncovered during the day but covered at night. It is very tender and painful if touched but otherwise is just ‘there’. My foot is still a bit swollen which makes shoes a bit painful but it has not stopped me doing anything and as far as I can tell there is not any infection.

Maybe with the hosting of a get together, the others in the close think if they offer it steps on yours or your neighbours toes. I and before T’s death, we are always away the eeek before zchristmas so usually miss any invites. The only time one was going to be before I went away, the person giving it caught a bug so it was cancelled. Anyway enjoy the evening.

SuffolkVera Report 22 Dec 2025 17:00

Afternoon all

How is your leg now AnnG? It sounds as though your weather has been better than ours and the scenery must be lovely. It has been quite bright here today and got to 9 degrees but I've felt cold all day.

You keep very busy Mandy and put me to shame sometimes, particularly with all the lovely things you cook for the family and all the knitting and crochet you do.

Fast fibre broadband is being brought to our house in the middle of January and 2 young men from OpenReach arrived unannounced early this morning to do a quick survey to see where the cables have got to come from and go to. They didn't need to come in the house but knocked as a courtesy to tell me they were outside and who they were. I know my neighbour saw me talking to them as I saw her head bobbing about behind her net curtains but a few minutes later my mobile went. I knew it would be her but I was busy so OH answered it. She was apparently letting us know that there were 2 suspicious looking men wandering about near our house. She knew I had been talking to them; she was just being nosy and trying to find out what was going on. Yesterday I had her on the phone complaining yet again about my newspaper delivery people. I admire the way she and her husband cope with their ill health and I am always friendly towards her but I do find it hard to like her sometimes.

I've finished all my wrapping now so that's another job ticked off the list. It's not just the list that's been ticked off, so has OH, lol. Every day after lunch he sits on the settee with a cuppa and then dozes off with the cup in his hand. Every day I nudge him awake and tell him to put the cup down. Today I was busy, didn't notice he had fallen asleep until there was an almighty crash. His mug had slipped out of his hand and smashed to smithereens on the hard wood floor. Why does he never break one of the horrible thick old mugs? It's always one I like. This time it was a plain white porcelain. I could have strangled him.

Our neighbours the other side have invited everyone in our little Close in for pre-Christmas drinks and nibbles this evening. They do it most years. One year they were unable to do it so we hosted it and I also did a farewell tea party for someone who was moving away. It's nice to keep these traditions up as it all helps the community spirit along and keeps us all friendly but it's a shame that it is always tonight's hosts or us. No-one else seems to be prepared to take a turn.

I started this about 3 pm but keep getting interrupted, the latest being a phone call from granddaughter who is down from Edinburgh. I must get on now or I won’t be ready to go next door at 7 pm.

Yes Vera the weather was kind, in fact it has been kind since I got here, it has been four sunny cold days. The views on the way and round Ennerdale were beautiful with the western mountains clear in the sun. We didn’t go to Ennerdale water as we were going to lunch in the village but it was a lovely ride out and back.

Good morning all. Sunny with cloud a bit breezy but dry and cold. A day in today, so chatting and reading. And watching the loads of birds on the feeders outside the window.
Might be back later.

Isn't it annoying when you do that Mel. Orange juice can be a bit sticky too. My mum would have called you a mucky pup.

It's been a murky, drizzly day today, not even a sliver of blue sky. We went out this morning to deliver some non-cards around. Rather than buy cards for all our current and ex-Club members when we see them a lot and can wish them Happy Christmas to their face we make a charity donation, this year to the Alzheimers Society. However I always print out some small sheets of paper with a Christmassy design of some sort and wishing everyone a happy Christmas and telling them which charity has received our donation. I had them all ready to take to the Christmas tea last Monday and it was cancelled. OH delivered 3 or 4 during his walks this week and this morning we drove round town delivering all the others. It seemed to take ages.

I came back and cooked a roast lamb dinner. I wasn't going to do a roast but OH does enjoy his roast and I didn't do one last Sunday. I've been trying to get on with some jobs since we finished eating but I've had one interruption after another, the latest being my neighbour ringing me and chatting for over half an hour.

I hope the weather was kind to you today AnnG as you went with sil to place his posy. Today is the first anniversary of the death of our daughter's partner. I spoke to her on Friday and sent her a text this morning. I think she will probably have gone to the woodland burial site where S was interred. I know she went on his birthday.

I'd better try and get a couple more jobs done; perhaps I'll wrap some bits that will be coming to daughter's with us.

Morning girls,

Bit dull here now but it was brighter when I got up at 8.05am pc sayng 7 degrees and cloudy. Yes I mentioned today would be the shortest day today. Now it will get lighter in the evenings a bit each day which can only be good.

Going to have a lazy day today and just muddle around.

Chelsea must be pleased she now has her first job and a wage at the end of the week or month. Well done and I hope you like it. <3

Good morning all still dark but I didn’t dare let myself go back to sleep again. Have to wash my hair which is a challenge as still trying to keep my wound dry. We are out to lunch near Ennerdale today after taking a posy to put where SiL’s late wife’s ashes were put. Hoping it stays dry. Last year it was horrible up there.

Annx Report 20 Dec 2025 18:14

I forgot to say Well Done Chelsea for getting herself a job! That will have boosted her confidence and will give her some welome money to spend :-D How nice that Jake didn't charge you for the pork pie too. I used to cut and freeze mine, but probably something different for us this year with OH's diet.

I'd mention about it to BIL Mel as I think it may back up some system files too. The way I looked at it was that I'd managed fine without it before without any problem.

Vera I think my friend must have thought getting more forgetful was dementia as her 'on the ball' older brother would have told her about driving as well. I can well imagine anyone being reluctant to see a doctor though knowing you could lose your driving licence when there's no-one else to drive you anywhere.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 20 Dec 2025 17:27

Thank you Vera for telling me something that I did know but had completely erased from my memory. I have in the past used notes or pages but have completely forgotten. At home I mostly use the main PC and the IPad for an hour or so in the evening. Yes it is a iPad. I just now need to train my brain to remember to use it.

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 20 Dec 2025 16:04

I missed you there Annx. I expect you enjoyed having a chat with your old friend. She has plenty of animals to keep her busy. All these activities help to keep the brain ticking over. I wonder if dementia is just her way of saying that she is a bit forgetful these days. That happens to the best of us as we get older. If she really has been diagnosed with dementia then she probably shouldn't be driving. By law she must tell the DVLA and probably her car insurance company but I expect her doctor would have told her that if she had a diagnosis.

We both like the taste of mincemeat but find it a bit sweet for us and years ago when I used to make my own jars of mincemeat I always added chopped apple to take some of the sweetness off. I think I'm in cooking mode at the moment. I've done my relish and my tart so now I am about to hunt for a greengage jam recipe as I've got some greengages from this year in the freezer,

I didn't sleep well last night and can't stop yawning at the moment. I think I'd better go and get a strong coffee to wake me up.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 20 Dec 2025 15:39

Thanks for the info Annx I have now said no thanks to it as it seems a bit to complicated for me. I have a hardrive that BIL has already put all my photos and docs on and something else I think so I don't think I shall be needing that.

Tomorrow is the shortest day so the evening shall start getting lighter again, something to look forward to. :-D

Hazel my neighbour came down and brought me two little presents and a card. they are the first ones I have had this year and they are sitting on my desk.

Its just started to get very gloomy here so I better go and corn the chickens.
